Topped up the tank in the weekend and noticed yesterday morning that there was a puddle of petrol under the car right under the tank. Got it to a mechanic who says that the rubber sealing between the tank and the filling pipe is cracked and the pipe is also a bit rusty. Fixing it is costing 5500 DKK. :'(
Curious to know if anyone has come across this before.

Wow! Equivalent of A$1240 seems excessive! I would be looking for a 2nd quote from someone else. Can't recall any other reports on here.
As I suspected very few mentions on here after 12 + years and countless thousands of threads.

Search for "leaking fuel" only bought up 4 links and none were really applicable to this scenario.

What are they doing for that price,
New tank etc...........?
Would have thought a new seal first then see how that goes before further cost

Tank needs to come out to replace rubber hose. Bit of work but not that $$$ much.
Possible DIY job.

The guy put a silicon seal for now to see how it works out.
If it doesnt help, will get quotes from other mechanics.

@GaKu Useless. :disapp: I use petrol to remove silicone.

Fair enough. I didn't think silicon would be a long term solution. :crazy1:

Agree its a temporary solution. I'll monitor it closely.

Maybe I'm ignorant but we do get silicon meant for petrol leaks like this one.

We have similar here although generally used with or alone as a ' form a gasket' product.
Translation of Danish: "Mechanics 71 Silicone Gasket is a practical, acid-free, elastic RTV silicone gasket used to replace or in connection with solid gaskets.
The product is easy to apply, fast drying, UV resistant and economical to use. Comes in environmentally friendly packaging, without any harmful fuel.
Silicone Gasket is resistant to oil, gasoline and solvents and can withstand both high and low temperatures."
No doubt it will be better than the general purpose silicone that I assumed he had used. Good luck with it.

I got the impression that it is a gasket between the metal pipe and the tank that is cracked. I will clarify at next week's service.
Is this not how it is built? Or is there actually a rubber pipe into the tank?

He did charge 550 DKK which I think is steep, but 10% of the cost to replace the pipe and the hose. Other mechanics would have replaced the whole thing and I would end up paying much more anyways.
An hour's labour costs 700 DKK here.

He charged AU$127.70 to put the car on his hoist and wipe 'silicone' onto a split HOSE.
Tank needs to come out to replace rubber hose. Bit of work but not that $$$ much.

GaKu was between a rock and a hard place.. hope it proves to be a long term fix.

I am hoping so too. Rest of the hose looks ok. Guessing road salt might have been the culprit...but cant be sure.
