Title: Diesel fuel filter change for PD?
Post by: Bob.W on March 08, 2021, 01:04:21
Hi Folks,

Just wondering if anyone has changed the fuel filter in their PD?

I've looked over the info on diesel fuel filter changes, which is all for the older i30's - unsure if the process is pretty much the same for the PD?

Doesn't look overly hard - albeit for the tricky location - the only thing that concerns me is that the only video I found on the subject said that you had to use a ODB scanner to prime the pump and expel air - for the i30 those are prohibitively expensive. But comments in the video did suggest that partially filling the filter with diesel after installing could be a workaround.  I'm unsure if this sounds viable as once the filter is out and if it doesn't work I'd be in a tad of bother.

Thoughts welcomed. :-)

Ok well I will post this up for other folks reference.  I had a mechanic do this for me yesterday - I will give this information to hopefully assist folks who might consider doing it themselves.

It seemed a reasonably tricky job. The mechanic had to remove the battery and a few other small bits to get enough access - he needed my assistance at a few points to hold stuff and access a few areas he just couldn't get his hands into (I'm normal sized and he's a giant with matching hands!). There's quite a few bolts in spots that you simply will not be able to remove without some specialist mechanic jointed & long socket extenders - if you've just got regular gear it will be a BIG struggle.

When you get to the fuel filter coming out of it's 'carrier' make sure you mark the connections or take a few photos.  He connected the new fuel filter all up and then filled it as much as he could with clean diesel fuel - then putting it back into place.  When everything was put back together he got me to turn the ignition on and off about 4-6 times. This was to assist in priming the pump and getting rid of the air in the system.  When I started it it took a few more cranks than normal but worked fine.  On subsequent restarts it was completely as normal.

Took in total about an hour. I'd say it's a 90min job for an average Joe - nothing hard but it's very tight and you'll either have to disconnect A LOT of stuff or you'll need some top shelf gear to undo all thats required.  Thats me sorted for another 50,000kms.

I've changed them on the FD diesel, but not looking forward to doing it on the GD as it looks far more inaccessible.

Just done my 2013  Diesel CW , air filter box removal
Unclamped battery, moved it forward about 50mm
Enough to remove the ECU.
The worst bit was the bottom fuel line connection didn't want to come off
I partially filled the filter from the bottom, and primed it when re fitted
All working ok. Ran as normal, no misfires hesitation.
