I'm running this pole so as to have something to refer to when a member posts regarding their i30, and hasn't mentioned its engine size. we now can refer to this pole and hopefully it may be easier to diagnose a problem, or question, and not have to guess the engine size or fuel of the members car.  ONCE YOUVE VOTED COULD YOU PLEASE POST WHAT YOUR ENGINE SIZE AND FUEL IS ALSO,THEN IT CAN BE REFERED BACK TO AT A LATER STAGE AND MATCHED UP TO THAT MEMBERS CAR] STEVE

both our cars are 2.0 petrol engines.

So Horsepower and Kilowatt I understand.
What is "ps" short for?
-
copied from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower#PS
PS
This unit (German: Pferdestärke = horse strength) is no longer a statutory unit, but is still commonly used in Europe, South America and Japan, especially by the automotive and motorcycle industry. It was adopted throughout continental Europe with designations equivalent to the English horsepower, but mathematically different from the British unit. It is defined by the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB)[7] in Braunschweig as exactly:
1 PS = 75 kilopond-meters per second
(75 kp·m/s)×(9.80665 N/kp) = 735.49875 N·m/s ≈ 735.5 N·m/s ≈ 735.5 W ≈ 0.7355 kW ≈ 0.98632 hp (SAE)
The PS was adopted by the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) and then by the automotive industry throughout most of Europe, under varying names. In 1992, the PS was rendered obsolete by EEC directives, when it was replaced by the kilowatt as the official power measuring unit. It is still in use for commercial and advertising purposes, in addition to the kW rating, as many customers are not familiar with the use of kilowatts for engines.
-
thanks Ian,i never knew about the PS measurement either.
-
just think of it as "nearly but not quite a HP" thats how ive looked at it, but wiki does a better job of explaining it!
-

On my car when you open the drivers door there is a sticker facing you which gives the car model and ps value.

We in the West are still a little hesitant in warming to the diesel family engine.
