Updates through the BBC.

Quote from: BBC
Former world snooker champion Alex Higgins has died aged 61 after a long battle against throat cancer.

The two-time world champion, a heavy smoker, was reportedly found dead in his flat in Belfast on Saturday.

Recent newspaper pictures showed a painfully thin Higgins in Spain after his hopes of having surgery to get new teeth had been dashed.

Higgins lost all his teeth during his cancer treatment but was not deemed fit enough to have the surgery.

The Northern Irishman Higgins had been suffering from throat cancer for more than a decade and he blamed his illness largely on the cigarette makers who sponsored his sport

He was a hero of mine.

I remember him well (scary that he was only 7 years older than me in that 2nd Picture)
I played A grade snooker in my younger years (great game)..

As a teenager I spent many hours in Smoky pool halls (instead of being at college  :-[)

Could have easily ended up with lung damage.. even as a non smoker..

Always sad when a "legend" dies..  :'( and also makes one feel old

It was a pleasure to watch snooker when he was playing.

None of that slow slow hit slow slow hit when he was about.

I remember him as well. I played a decend game myself, often with a friend that had his own 12*6 and I did eventually get my own 100 year old full-size table.

Sadly I have to admit he was not older than me when he left us but four years younger!

I was never really any good. :'(
