Title: Wrong engine oil?
Post by: chewbaccatakingadump on March 04, 2025, 10:01:35
I just purchased a Hyundai i30 FD with G4FC engine 1.6 L petrol
I just did an oil change with Castrol 10w 40 magnetic and I am concerned as I just learnt about the GD series Theta engines having frequent engine failures due to oil sludge.

I might have put in the wrong oil in.
I believe it is a Gamma 1 engine.
I live in a hot area of Australia and while typically in  this region we do get lower temperatures (for Australia) we don't tend to get snow).
Should I dump this new oil or run it in and dump it in a a few thousand ks?
Thanks

I would not change it.  You have plenty of hot weather protection with 40 and no issue with 10W for colder areas.  Being an FD, I guess it has high mileage, so this oil would be perfect in my opinion. Most of the oil brands I checked recommend 10W-30 and Penrite and Castrol recommend 10W-40.  Of course there are also plenty of 5W-30 oils that are compatible.

Thanks so much.
I have rechecked the oil to rego on castrol and it seems OK.
I will monitor for oil consumption too.
