I have experienced intermittent electric issues with the (interior) front map lamps & the (exterior) position lights.
Front map lamps
A couple of years ago the map lights (located just near the rear-view mirror) had a problem for a while (weeks to months), which then resolved itself. I think it was that they stopped coming on when I opened the door, although they could be turned on manually.
The current issue is the opposite: they come on automatically when I open the door. However, when driving (or waiting at traffic lights, etc.) I cannot manually turn them on by pressing on the housing (translucent diffuser). Clearly the bulbs themselves work, and I suppose the relevant fuse is OK, so I can only guess it is either a faulty map-lamp configuration switch or some 'loose connection'. Any advice?
Position lights
In January this year I noticed that the driver's side "position light" was not able to be turned on. [Spoiler alert: a week or so later it had resolved itself, and since then it has occasionally failed to work.]
I drove directly to a Repco centre, and enquired about this with the staff, at which point two problems arose.
- The first problem was that the staff member had no idea what I was talking about when I said "position light". That is Hyundai's term, not mine. It describes a weak lamp mounted in the headlight assembly (directly under the low-beam lamp), the main purpose of which is apparently to help other people notice your car, and a subsidiary purpose might be to help with parking. So they are something like "daytime running lights (https://practicalmotoring.com.au/car-advice/daytime-running-lights-law/)" or
"driving lights (https://practicalmotoring.com.au/car-advice/daytime-running-lights-law/)" or "parking lights (https://samove.raa.com.au/whats-the-deal-with-parking-lights/)". - The second problem was that the Owner's Manual specifies that the position lights are rated at 5 W, but doesn't mention whether they have a "wedge" connector or screw-in connector. So I wasn't sure which to buy as a replacement, and the staff member didn't know, and said the only way to know would be to pull the existing one out.
In any case, a few days later the problem had temporarily resolved itself, as that position light was able to be turned on again. Then later it went off, and currently I believe is working again.
What could cause this? The bulb cannot be blown. The fuse cannot be blown. Something physically loose? Or some electronic fault?
USB socket in central storage unit
The USB socket in the central storage unit has probably never worked, ever since I got the car new. That is, I never used/tested it initially, and the first attempt some years later was unsuccessful. Not sure if there was simply something that missed being connected, or another reason.
Just mentioning it here to complete the description of electrical problems in the vehicle.
