I forget who, but someone else had the same problem on a nearly new motor, reported about 4 or 5 months ago.

remove the door rubber gently from the top of the a pillar to the scuff plate ***be careful door rubbers are easily damaged***

C'mon guys, what would you expect say from a car company if the floor carpet wore through from a driver's high heels? Seen it, my view, user problem.
Same here; it's a door seal, not a "bum buffer".
I would see it differently if the rubber was paper thin or some other specification that indicated it was of poor quality... otherwise it's just one of those things you have to accept as "your problem".
Jees, ya can't go 'em for everything.
I see the warranty for engine, suspension, electronic failures etc., not minor rattles or general wear.
What if the sill got scrached from dragging your shoe across it every time you got in? Surely not warrranty? Hell, the paint was too thin!
IMO that rubber should not be cracking like that in such a short time.
I'll be checking mine tomorrow but I haven't noticed it.
However, if the seat can travel back far enough to allow a person's body to rub on it hen accessing the car then the rubber should be of a standard to stand up to that.
Well I took the car back to the original dealer and got the same response....Not covered by warranty....Hyundai will not cover any door seal if there's the slightest sign of wear.
The fella did suggest I contact Hyundai privately to see if they'll consider it so I guess that's my next plan of attack.C'mon guys, what would you expect say from a car company if the floor carpet wore through from a driver's high heels? Seen it, my view, user problem.

Pip, I guess I'll have to agree to disagree with what you're saying.....Unlike if it was high heels, I'm unable to remove my "bum" or in this case my hip. I may be on the larger side but I still think it must be poor quality and thin rubber for it to wear through in such a short length of time. I had a Holden Barina for just on 20 years and never had an issue with the seals and the Barina was a much smaller car than the i30.IMO that rubber should not be cracking like that in such a short time.

I couldn't agree more....The back of the seat is in line with the pillar....If I pivot on the seat and swing my legs out, my hip and arm are against the pillar.
I'm no spring chicken and like many my age, have back problems. I physically can't twist myself in to knots to get out of the vehicle without touching the pillar. Frankly, I reckon it's bloody ridiculous and totally unreasonable to expect anyone to do it....
Oh, nearly forgot...bumpkin & Pip, going by the link supplied earlier is this thread, there does appear to have been someone else with the same issue......
http://i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,5331.msg57567.html#msg57567
Shame he didn't let us know how it all ended up....
Sorry for venting my frustration on here. :-[
The actual problem isn't the pivoting on the seat, I can do that easily (thanks for the suggestions and links anyhow).
The problem is the seat position in relation to the pillar which in itself isn't any real problem other than the obviously delicate seal.
Anyhow, I've waffled on long enough on this subject, so I'll pull the pin for now and once I've written a letter and hopefully received an answer back, I'll fill you in.....

have you actually priced a new one? i bet its only like $50 ~ $80... wont be that expensive...
Thankyou for your response.
Hyundai Australia has advised if a dealer cannot claim a part under the
warranty terms and conditions, which stipulate that a component or part
failure must occur rather then wear and tear or external influences which
cause a breakage or tear, then it is NOT a warranty provision.
Please be advised that more care is needed when entering or exiting the
vehicle to illuminate or prevent rubbing against the seal as admitted by
the owner.
To be honest it seems a reasonable reply to me. Wear and tear is never included in any warranty.I think you'll find "fair" wear and tear is never included.......
Pardon the pun but I think rustynutz patience is wearing thin...I can see both points of view but the short length of time it took to happen is a worry... :'(You're right, Daz....it is wearing a bit thin...I'm certainly not gonna be backward in telling people what I think of Hyundai and their so called warranty and quality.
woops... i re read that last post... it sounds a bit harsh... but its not meant to be like that... just stating facts! *shrugs shoulders* no offence meant!
..I'm certainly not gonna be backward in telling people what I think of Hyundai and their so called warranty and quality.Really? C'mon it's not a warranty issue at all.
Perhaps they need to add something to their warranty exclusions...Hmmm, maybe warranty is void if you weigh over 100 kilos, are aged over 50 and have a disability.....I'm all three....I'm truly surprised you are persisting with this. :-[
Can you imagine the uproar?

If you can't find a sympathetic dealer, then accept it, don't bad mouth Hyundai. I am yet to hear of a genuine warranty issue denied.
At Hyundai we’re all about you. We’ve grown to become the world’s fifth largest automotive group by keeping our customers happy – by delivering award-winning quality across our range, and striving to ensure our service experience is second to none.Well, I'm an unhappy customer and it appears that Hyundai has no interest in making me a happy customer again...and it all boils down to a $130 part which probably actually costs them next to nothing......
It might be possible to apply a clear plastic tape to the surface (of a replacement) to reduce the friction as its rubbed?
Or maybe neatly disect the offending piece of rubber, and put some self-adhesive rubber of similar profile on the door itself rather than on the pillar. sticky rubber trim is available cheaply from HK sellers on ebay (<$20US). You might need some clear tape where the rubber was, to stop that wearing too.
If you do get new genuine seal it might be best to just replace the offending segment, that way you could use one piece to make several replacement parts.
Put it this way, Pip...if it was your drivers seat that had worn through by doing nothing more than getting in and out of your car over a period of 6 months would you still say it was not a warranty issue? My gripe is no different....
The side of the seat looks to be wearing a bit, if you magnify the image...
Are you saying that IF Hyundai were to show a goodwill gesture and replace the seal FOC this time that in 6 months time and because of your weight/movement/agility issues the same were to happen that you would not be bad mouthing the company again???
Rusty, I agree a prematurely worn seat would be a warranty issue. Seats are designed to be sat on. The dust seal is not. I think that's exactly the point you are stuck on. Your gripe is different
The way I see it you have two choices.... cut 2" off your legs or write an email to Hyundai Australia asking them for a ruling.. (I which one i'd rather do)

That could be quite possible....but then again, I might never have an issue with the seal again. Have you considered that the current seal MAY have been faulty and this "rubbing" from my body/clothes may not be the actual cause of it's failure, bearing in mind I only wear normal everyday clothing...there's nothing abrasive about the materials used.
Dear Russell.
Thankyou for your response.
Hyundai Australia have advised warranty provision will only cover a
component or part failure and not a breakage, deterioration, wear or tear
on any part of the vehicle. Please refer owner to Service Passport booklet
under "General Exception" on page 3 for further details.
This information is provided for all Hyundai owners of the vehicle and it
is the onus of the owner to read and be aware of warranty and other
exclusions and requirements in order to preserve the 5 year Unlimited km
warranty as per Service Passport booklet.
The warranty coverage, rules, terms and regulations apply to every Hyundai
vehicle sold, as per the service passport booklet and therefore do not
discriminate towards any owner/s of the vehicle.

This may sound rubbish  and only a suggestion.I think it's a great idea, but then I suggested it too!
But if you could have a portion of the seal fixed to the door, rather than the B pillar then it would not get rubbed as you enter the car. Would need a good body shop to do it.
I think it's a great idea, but then I suggested it too!

Sorry, had not fully read your above post :-[
Thanks guys....
If I have no joy re warranty, I'll think I'll just put up with the clear tape for a while, it doesn't look that bad, certainly not bad enough to rush out and get a brand new seal.
Thankyou for your response.
Hyundai Australia have advised we certainly empathize with your concerns
raised, but unfortunately as this issue has been diagnosed as wear and
tear, not a manufacturing defect, it is therefore not covered under
warranty.
Hyundai Motor Company Australia are unable to assist further in this
matter.

now I'll be letting everyone I know of how they, regardless of what they quote on their website, aren't really interested in keeping their customers happy....
As much as I'd like to jump up & down with angst at this, my personal opinion is that this is NOT a defect. Used for its primary function as a draught stop / seal, the only expected contact is full on, no friction, so it is not designed to withstand friction. I dare say these seals are made in the same way, from the same materials, as many other cars. I am 1.8 metres tall (6'2" in old money) and 210lbs but I manage to get in & out of my car without constantly causing friction across my door seal.
Question to the OP...
Do you park with the drivers door closely adjacent to a wall, causing a limited door opening for you to squeeze in?
I'm more than happy with how the dealer responded to the spoiler problem....the key word here is dealer, I had no contact with Hyundai.
And yes, I do tell people....

There are naturally plenty of times when I do need to squeeze in, such as when parking alongside other cars in a carpark, but at home, no....
Many of my friends have watched as I get in and they all say that they can't see how I could possibly get in without brushing against the door opening.
I've argued with Hyundai that it is totally unreasonable to expect someone to be able to access their car at all times without brushing against the door opening.
Their stance is, if a seal fails and there's ANY sign of wear whatsoever, then the warranty claim will be rejected.
So for everyone else out there that may brush against it less frequently than I, don't be surprised if you're up for a new seal sometime down the track......
But the dealer has only agreed to a new spoiler because Hyundai told them they could
Therefore you have had no direct contact with Hyundai but your dealer has for this issue.
As I keep my door latches well greased I keep WELL away from brushing against anything attached to the door-frame, But dont get me wrong, I do feel your pain here.
If its still under Warranty what I suggest may not be a great idea... But...
Take the seal off & have a look at it's cross sectional construction, maybe measure it / draw it accurately, or even better take it with you to a scrappies.
Get amongst the more modern cars in there & do likewise with the door-seals.
Buy one that fits / suits and if it is big / long enough replace it or cut out a section of the existing one & insert a section of the replacement. Do it accurately & there wont be any wind noise or water leak issues.
Just an Off-the-Wall suggestion... At least you will be better able to judge if it is a poor materials issue for Hyundai...

Isn't that basically what I said?

I guess once the spoiler is removed it would be pretty hard for Hyundai to dispute how good the glue had been holding anyhow....with the seal, that would be another story, I assume the seal would come off in one piece and Hyundai would still be able to see the worn section.QuoteAs I keep my door latches well greased I keep WELL away from brushing against anything attached to the door-frame, But dont get me wrong, I do feel your pain here.

Thanks for your suggestions, Ffoxy....Like I mentioned earlier, I think I'll just stick with the tape for the moment and see how that stands up to any wear. Maybe if I hold off long enough, others may be unlucky enough to have the same problem and I might then have more chance of having it replaced.....
Besides, next time I'm at the dealers I might just have a good ol' whinge to the sales manager who sold me the car and see what she has to say...I figure it can't hurt...
Might be worth keeping an eye on this Thread in here as it relates to seat BOLSTER wear... I have asked if there is any visible wear to the door seal...

Nice post Nik (you are a gentleman ) but I already knew that...
Thanks for sticking up for our favourite (non-human) model... :D
Do you wear clothes made out of sandpaper? Mine is about 7 months old and still looks brand new inside. :)
interesting thread. i'm not sure i'd agree it's a warranty issue either but i did have a random couple of thoughts in line with it.
not ever having a 3 door car, how do rubbing against door seals getting out of the back seat of one them go? if that makes sense...
any thoughts of getting any independent to look at the seal to make a final 'ruling' on whether its 'fair' wear and tear or something else. if its just normal wear and tear than its obviously just not going to be covered. i guess it would be like me asking for a new drivers seat as my leather sides are creasing a little, when it comes down to that being the nature of leather and looking after it properly. you could therefore perhaps look into (and i guess this goes back to do 3 door car seals rub or not?) is there meant to be any 'known' method of maintaining the seals in a certain way for this particular usage. i wasn't told how to look after my leather seats but it would be reasonably assumed i should know, whereas i don't think its assumed one is supposed to know how to maintain their seals. at least i don't - maybe i'm wrong here. if an independent was to rule it's not reasonable wear, and that it was safe to assume you should not know that they needed any special care, only then maybe you could jump up and down about it. in the long run, and please don't take this the wrong way as it's a genuine question, is it worth it though? hyundai have obviously made it clear what their standing is.
that was a bit long winded wasn't it
Being a tad smaller to what we are used to and the likes of myself being a little under 6' tall the way we use the car may be the issue. If we were to do the same to any car, that is, continually rub against a seal or seat bolster I am sure you would see the same result!
I'm the same as you mate,it all looks as new still.
Just normal clothes, jeans, nothing abrasive....In an Armchair Factory, the majority of returns and complaints were about "worn out fabric covering".
