Title: 2008 i30 FD clutch damper delete
Post by: i30CRDI on May 11, 2026, 02:27:41
Hi Folks,
I recently removed the clutch damper and installed a blanking plug after having trouble changing down gears, it definitely made a difference.
After around 1 week however the slave cylinder failed  and was leaking fluid, after removal I could see it was on its way out and quite badly rusted out internally so could have been a case of the straw that broke the camels back.

I have now ordered a new slave and master cylinder but wondering if I should replace the blank plug with a new damper. Has anyone done the delete and not had any issues afterwards? I'm happy to leave the blank plug in but wonder if any issues such as possible excess pressure popping the seals on the slave or master if the damper is not in place.

Cheers
Mark

Hi, Mark. From the 17 years I've been on this forum, nobody has ever posted regretting replacing the damper with the plug. That observation may be all you need to know.

I replaced the damper with a plug, but the root cause was leaky slave cylinder and worn out clutch. After they were replaced I didn't refit the damper and can't say I noticed any difference. It probably depends on your driving style and how gentle you are with the clutch.

Thanks Guys,
All appears well after the master/slave replacement and I have left the blanking plug in for now. Interestedly the Mitsubishi part substitute for the Damper valve is only $16.85 at my local Mitsi dealer, unfortunately there are non in the country at the moment but I may order one anyway as he said about 1 month away. The part number is MR 319469 if anyone is looking for a replacement damper.

Cheers

Mark
