Title: I30 Rust below Hatchback read window (and dimming the stereo)
Post by: Thulsa Doom on November 23, 2010, 11:33:54
I bought an i30 in Feb' 2010.  An Editions model, 1.6 CRDi.

It's been a great car and still is.

2 issues though, and wondering if anyone else has had them.

1.  Front bonnet, although closes, seems to not close enough.
i.e. I can push it down a little further even though it has caught the catch correctly.

2.  Rust spots below rear window.
Just under where the rear window ends there are small pin-prick sized rust spots from left to right.
Not a lot of them, but enough to notice.  Very mild acne!

I'll be visiting the dealer this weekend to show them.

Oh, and one other gripe.
The stereo light is so bright at night.  I wish it could dim rather than the back-light be ON or DARK.

There are some rubber bungs top and bottom (4 in all) that you can screw in and out to make it a better fit. Took me quite a few minutes playing with mine to get them in the right places. You probably want to check the ones on the hatch too (2).

I think they are to do with inperfections in the Zinc layer, but thats not proven. Hipposniper has/had the, same issue, he will no doubt update us, or if you search he has a thread on the subject.

They seem to have omitted the dimmer from later cars (or at least some trim levels). Ask you dealer when you are in, I guess they can buy the dimmer rheostat and cabling as a spare part. Its not perfect but will help a lot. No one has tried this so far.

Some cars have a dimmer for the radio?

Yeah, up until 2010MY all UK cars had it I believe, presumably now its just on the Premium or the Premium and the Comfort. Its a rheostat/variable resistor switch that connects to the radio wiring. It's small thumbwheel that is installed by the ESP switch. I'd guess you could retrofit it to any model, but no-one has so far reported that they have tried. Funky might know.

Ha, guess what? I've got one but it's so long since I altered it I'd forgotten that it did the radio, thought it was just binacle lights. :-[

In Poland, also happens issue rust spots on the trunk lid in Korean and Czech version (near upper stop lamp or below rear window). In my i30 is OK fortunately.
In this case dealers change lid or  paint again (under warranty of course). It's factory defect and concerns only rear lid (but it's very irritating )

I was just wondering what the dealer ended up saying about the rust spots.

I have just noticed some small rust 'looking' spots along the left hand side of my car. They sound exactly the same as you have mentioned but are not just in one spot, they are all along the left side of the car.

I will be taking the car back to the dealer (again - just got it back on Friday due to my back right door lock breaking)....Oh, and my car is only 3weeks old. LOL (if i don't laugh i will cry)

I had so many problems with my previous car and i really don't want to have a repeat of that with this car, but so far it is only superficial problems
