This is a very excellent forum where there has been lots of good advice, and with respect, some misleading advice. Nevertheless this is and should be a forum of strong opinions where everyone has a say...
This is a starter thread where everyone can show their knowledge (or otherwise) about how the "others" have no idea  how cars work or how they should be driven. This can be a whinge thread... but please in good humour and certainly with an real effort to educate!
Let me start with my pet motoring peave... hmmm... what is it?...
I honestly think this will not be controversial; People that use "my" space when changing lanes when I've allowed sufficient room in front between me and the car in front. It's ok when the traffic is busy and everyone is trying to get home but when there is room and time it just shits me when I need to accomodate someone that simply "pushes in" without apparent reason or consideration.
And on the more technical front I offer nothing to start, although I imagine someone would like to tell us about slip angles, suspension tuning, gas flow, super/turbo charging, gearing, relationship of torque and power, difference between diesel and petrol/gas engines and any number of things to educate us.
Come on this is an open invitation to tell us what you think we ought to know. Don't be shy.

People that use "my" space when changing lanes when I've allowed sufficient room in front between me and the car in front.
This is the norn where I live.
It's as if by flashing the indicators the space is automatically there for them.
Even when the space is not there they will just move over expecting you to give way even thro' you have the right of passage.

Incorrect use of Fog lights        £30 fine for incorrect use

People who think having a 3 inch square ice free hole in their windscreen to look out off when setting off.

:scared: :scared: I had an 18 wheel truck do this to me in the snow the other night, he came down the outside lane of the dual carriageway as I was treading carefully at 45mph behind the queue of cars in front, realised that the snow in his lane was piling up, hit it and just pulled in, bloody dangerous trucker from Scumdee who was swiftly reported................for all the good that will do
-
Tail gaters
Especially when I am the victim.
Even more so when it is a 40 ton lorry trying to climb into my boot.

I am going to play devils advocate here   and blame the manufacturers. In the old days when we first started fitting spotlights to our motors, you bought 2 white driving lamps for the top of the bumper and two yellow ones for under the bumper, wired them to different switches and off you went. These days cos fog lights are also white, folk don't understand the difference between driving lamps and fog lamps, perhaps cars need to be like phones and come with quick reference guides highlighting the vehicles features which are immediately apparent rather than hiding them in massive manuals which people definitely don't read, look at the number of requests we get on here for items which are in the owners handbook...........
I think this is further complicated these days by manufacturers having the bumper inset lights connected to the indicators so only one comes on going round junctions/roundabouts etc, then switch back off after a set time.
-
This problem with Fog lights being used as Driving lights must be world wide as we have exactly the same problem people here. I think a lot of people feel it's a cool look a bit rally driverish .
-
I will play the devils advocate too :tomato: The foglights on the i30 (in oz anyway) and on my Hybrid aren't that bright as to cause an issue for any other drivers on the road... I can't see the problem. I think most of us agree that the mid range and higher models with foglights look better than those without.
I think a car with headlights and (white) foglights on can look quite sporty and in the case of my Hybrid they do light up the sides of the road a little bit extra to help with spotting wildlife etc.. I have my Headlights (and foglights) set to auto and they come on right on dusk by themselves.
Hopefully they won't book me here as it doesn't seem to be a big issue as far as the local police are concerned.
Bright driving lights (within the town boundary or not dipped for oncoming traffic) are a different matter..
My pet hates are tail gaters, people who don't indicate (or leave their indicators on when not turning - very dangerous ) and slow drivers in the right lane..
Oh, and people who drive slow on single lanes then speed up when you try to pass on passing lanes..
-
I hate the drivers that sit up your clacker out on the highway, then fly past at the first opportunity only to slow right down at the first sign of a few corners which then holds everyone up.
-
people (normally female) who pull up 5 metres short of the junction and when there is a gap in the traffic where they could have gone, pull foreward to the stop lines ???????????
-
Oh, and people who drive slow on single lanes then speed up when you try to pass on passing lanes..
This sh!ts me to tears, and I quite often pretend in my mind I am passing them and then throwing tyre spikes out my window, then I come back to reality and just sit back and calm down.

-
I had a real bad one on the way to Launceston recently.. 80 to 90kph on the single lanes (seemed to have trouble deciding) then when I went to pass on the passing lane sped up to 110 Kph.. wow did that make me cranky
-
In Adelaide, The Right hand lane has become the new Left hand lane.
Right hand lane hogs absolutely everywhere doing 60k in a 80k zone. Cops seem oblivious to it.
Even indicators are optional it seems.
When they see me swearing at them or giving the bird, they look at you as if you are the crazy one. Even trucks are doing it now. I am sure Adelaide drivers are the worst in the world.
Rocket.

Yeah me too and the ones that will do 150kpm to pass you and then reset their cruies to sit on 105km ...... bugs me big time
We are encouraged here in WA to drive with our dipped headlights on at all times on country roads during the day, which I feel is a great idea and a lot easier to see on coming vehicles.
Btw way I like the look of UM's sister too ......... as well as UM that is :)

This might be petty but just one (There are many) of my pet hates are the w@nker$ that doctor their number plates with rivets& plugs etc, so that it spells out their name. I mean,c'mon, just HOW VAIN are you people ??? ???
-
I hate it when people drive with their headlights on during the day......
Fair enough if the weather is lousy, but fair dinkum, if you can't see a car during the day then perhaps you shouldn't be driving? :-\

happens a lot in central qld. thought it weird at first but pretty used to it now. its something to do with heat haze? or something, i keep getting different reasons depending on who i ask

Well here in Europe [Not sure if it is going to be worldwide], ALL cars for 2011 MUST have their lights on during the day. I guess it's just like the Volvos that have had them this way for years. Personally, it doesn't bother me and think it is a good saftey feature :goodjob:.

odd. for the record i prefer they didn't, i'm just getting used to it. but i can't see why you'd make it a necessity. unless you have bad lighting there?
which actually is a valid point as england for example does have different lighting to say australia.

No doubt our bureaucrats will attempt to bring it in in Australia sooner rather than later.....gotta be seen to be doing something...
They introduced it with motorcycles back in the 90's but, after protests the law was later rescinded as there wasn't enough proof that having headlights "hardwired" permanently on was of any benefit....

Idiots at roundabouts not indicating properly and/or changing lanes while on the roundabout...GEEEZZZ I hate that
It causes a fair bit of one finger saluting from me, I'm afraid to say. :scared: :scared:

People with fluffy toys hanging from their rear view mirror.
Signs in the rear window proclaiming "Baby on Board"
or even worse "Little Prince/Princess on Board"
Whats all that about?

What you said, U.M....plus what is it that is so hard to understand about giving way at a roundabout?
It really bugs me that most drivers think you have to give way to vehicles on your right that are approaching the roundabout. The rules (in Australia) clearly state that a driver entering a roundabout must give way to any vehicle IN the roundabout....

Yep, hate those, however they are a good safety feature for surrounding motorists, if somebody is displaying one of these it means they are not paying attention to you and that they are actually arguing with the fruit of their loins in the back seats. This means that you should back off (for your own safety) as they are about to commit the most ridiculous move you have ever seen. :goodjob:

but you're allowed to change lanes while on the roundabout
well there's always the fun of watching people miss their turn off on a roundabout so decide to hit reverse and try again. yes i have seen this
but i will admit i have had my share of bad roundabout exits. usually ones that have changed since the last time you have used them with inadequate to no signage during roadworks, and you realise at the very last possible second you're in the wrong lane and have to make a terrifying mad dash to jump a lane much to screaming tirading stress of the driver you cut off. said roundabout being that huge one at the brisbane airport crossroads gateway motorway with traffic lights. i didn't mean to but i was lost, highly stressed, and could not handle having to go around that damn roundabout again to get to my exit just because there was no signage telling me what lane i had to be in to exit in the first place! 'phew' :faint:
-

Bonus points for when the sign is dead centre of the rear window. Presumably so they can use the read view mirror to check is hasn't fallen off.
I've seen people drive with their satnav stuck right in front of them. Not the centre of the windscreen, but right in their line of sight directly above the steering wheel. :scared:
-
Another thing I hate is when women open the door to let the clutch out. Geez
-
I am sure Adelaide drivers are the worst in the world.
No.
Come to the UK and you see drivers who just sit in the 2nd and 3rd lanes on motorways for miles and miles and miles with no one in lane 1.
I once followed a car from Carlise to near Preston, say some 90/100 miles, with the car sat in the middle lane doing no more than 60mph
(I was going slow because I had a metro full to the brim with cases, 2 kids and a wife and you only went faster with a down hill and the wind behind you  )
I tend to pull up to them in lane 1 and just hang slightly back for a while then make a point of overtaking by going behind then to lane 3 then sit in front of them some way in front and you should see how they move into lane 1 so quick as they think I'm an unmarked traffic car.
-
(I was going slow because I had a metro full to the brim with cases)
A METRO ....... A REAL METRO
I remember them well.

YES
A genuine Austin Metro which served me for 8 years before I sold it to a 17 yo who then got 5 more years out of it.
PS It passed each MOT without a hitch.

I'll bet you wouldn't want one now though :o :o I had a 1.3 and at the time, thought it was the bees knees :goodjob:
-
Yep, I had a 1.3HLS, one step down from the MG, white mag wheels, striping kit, roof spoiler and 4 big Cibies on the front bumper, I think the lights weighed more than the rest of the car.
I remember getting a puncture one day, pulled the jack out of the boot and went to work. Cranking away but the car didn't seem to be going up to quick, lokked up to realise that the drivers seat was rising instead
I learnt a lot about engines and DIY maintenance on that car, think my arse was more often sticking out of the bonnet than on the seat! When she went she was fast though, and boy did they hold the road.
-
I hate tailgaters, people who drive 20 under the spead limit and then speed up when you go to pass them, the morons who jump into gaps I leave so I feel safe.. the whole lot!
On the Headlight's I always had at least my parker on while driving my Old girl (Black) and I'm just getting out of the habit now I've got Bluebelle, but I always turn them on on Country roads...
Honestly drivers in Perth Suck, and all you need to do to realise how true this is, is to drive on the Freeway in peak hour(s) traffic...
-
but you're allowed to change lanes while on the roundabout [/quote]
That is true, snowcherry, but only if you indicate and shoulder check. I really meant idiots that go into a roundabout in one lane, move across to the other lane, then move back across back into the original lane they entered the roundabout on...without indicating.
Idiots failing to indicate left when exiting roundabouts also have a knack of getting my middle finger erect
-
OK. I can't hold off any longer.
Some of the above also affect me but I'll re-list because I have a different take on some of them.
Sorry Dazz but I absolutely detest people driving with their fog lights on when there's no fog. Apart from the fact that it's against the law, regardless of the "intensity" of them, they add light sources to what is flooding into oncoming drivers' eyes. I know they're down low (as they should be) but they aren't necessary.
I drove back from Brisbane the other night (after going to see David Strassman and LMTO), and was again impressed with the spread and vision given by the i30 lights even on low beam.
I don't like people pulling into my "safety zone" in front of me either but I have to say, on a multi-lane road there are numerous valid reasons for doing so - needing to get out of the way of a fast approaching car from the rear, needing to leave the highway on one side or the other, and so on. Now, when it happens I try to remind myself of the times I have had to do it. Mind you, far too many do it dangerously, even stupidly.
People who pull up at a set of lights in the centre lane but don't put their indicator on until the light goes green and you're stuck behind them.
Tailgaters. I just go progressively slower and slower. I know I'm probably going to end up a victim of road rage one day but its just my little protest.
Driving the Pacific Hwy in particular where there are long stretches of one lane each way then "passing lanes". at which point the asshole who's been driving 10 or so klms under the speed limit, suddenly speeds up to a few k's above it, meaning if you pass him, the cop sitting at the end of the passing lane strip is going to get you.
Pushbike riders who ride in packs across the whole lane when they have been presented with bike lanes aplenty - especially on the Sunshine Coast. When I was a young driver, someone gave me a piece of advice which I've never forgotten. There is no point in being in the right if you end up in a cemetery. Push bike riders love to flaunt their right to be on the road. But if being there and trying to "take" your right of way from a car kills you, it's not worth it.

THAT roundabout! It changes every few months and has just changed again (whilst we were overseas). A bloody nightmare, I agree.
-
Speaking of motoring ignorance and roundabouts, what about those bloody "two way" roundabouts you have in the UK?
We ran into one in 2000. I think it was near Milton Keynes.
An absolute nightmare.
-
Airheads on mobile phones get on my goat :'( :'(

Drivers that are so paranoid of getting pinged by a speed camera that they travel at 5-10 k's under the speedlimit.....

glad i'm not the only one!
it might be fine for people who use it every day but when you're visiting the area and haven't seen it in months it's confusing as anything. :-\

They're pretty good if you're ready for them and know what to do. Complete nightmare if you just come across one unprepared.
Seems the fashion amongst UK road planners at the moment is for managed interchange junctions instead of roundabouts. I'm not a 100% convinced.
-
Wow! You're not kidding about it being a nightmare....
-
People who drive so close to your rear end BECAUSE they can see by the gloss of your paint work and your rego number plate 'IT'S A NEW CAR' ... lets get the rubber glove and check out his prostate while we're here up his arse .......

Illegal in UK and they will be fined and points on licence if caught.
But a lot still drive and phone at the same time

Yeah. That's the type.
You're right. They seem to work. I just made a quick decision as to where I wanted to get off and pointed the car there - and it worked. There were a lot more cars on the one I was in, though.
Hope I never see another one.

I've seen that roundabout set, and believe me it's no problem whatsoever. When it starts to scare you, you simply click the "forward" button on photobucket and move onto the next picture  :P
Sorry for the OT

have a question. where the white van is....can the car on the right of him (and a bit behind) turn right to exit the road on the right, or do you have to turn left and go all the way around?
it looks scary, but i made myself look at it for awhile, and i 'think' i'm getting it
-
Yesterday on the way home from work in three lane traffic, I pulled up at a set of traffic lights next to a guy on a motor scooter texting on a mobile. He had positioned his scooter in a left turn only lane and then proceeded straight into the intersection when the lights changed to green...still texting!! I could have flattened him (maybe I should have...improve the gene pool)

If I understand it correctly, he can turn right at the "little" feeder roundabout just in front of him into one of the three lanes with the arrows pointing anti-clockwise. But one of our UK "locals" may be better placed to clarify it.
And you're right, Snowcherry. The system does work but I want to know what the guy was on who thought it out in the first place. :scared:

It's not the attendants fault it's the bastards that keep holding up garages that are the problem.. a lot of things that used to be easy are now hard because too many do the wrong thing.. like all the ID you need to open a bank account now because there are so many shonky people around

Maybe so but I still find it offensive that motorcyclists are singled out as if they are somehow more likely to rob a servo or something. From the footage I see on the news, helmets don't appear to be the number 1 choice for hold ups. I see more baseball caps, beanies & hoodies. I don't see any signs requesting these items and, as Paul said, burkas to be removed as a condition of entry..
Anyhow, I'll keep on refusing to remove my helmet and if I've already filled up, what are they gonna do? They either take my money or I walk out without paying....

And you're right, Snowcherry. The system does work but I want to know what the guy was on who thought it out in the first place. :scared:
You have to treat each junction and roundabout as separate junctions and roads.
You don't think about the next until you have left the one you are at.

hmmm thats what i thought, just the black vehicle in the middle was confusing me as i couldn't tell its orientation. actually i think it makes sense.
wow.

He's driving over the top of the roundabout (bad driving), he should be about 6 feet further to his left.

Most motorcyclists are mature riders, and nice responsible people,
however the new young scooter riders that weave in and out of traffic overtaking then undertaking piss me (a mature bike rider)off, and i am not surprised car drivers get annoyed.
-
.. overtaking then undertaking...
Reminds me of the old saying about overtaking... there's the right side and then there's the suicide.

I love a good rant..... :D
I particularly hate the people who do 90k's while the traffic is coming the other way, and then hit 110 when there is a gap.  On the single lane each way that is most of my trip to work, I am often stuck behind someone who appears to be scared by the traffic going the other way and takes the foot off. Then when there is a gap for you to pass, they hit the pedal and take off. It has always annoyed me, but I find it even worse now because the cruise control means you seem to notice it even more.
I'm not sure what their technical name is, but I hate the big metal trucks with the metal trailers. They usually carry stones or rocks or something like that. I see at least three each way, each day, on the drive to work. It is a little disturbing to look in the rearview mirror and suddenly see only the trucks's grill. :scared: They seem to get enjoyment out of seeing how close they can get to the back of your car.
I, too, hate people who drive a straight line through a roundabout. I have been in the right lane when someone in the left lane has driven into my lane then back into their own, just to save themselves turning the wheel and following the white line.
I think that's enough for now......... :D

oh yeah you see these guys on the highway sometimes. we have a lot of trucks obviously and the little car in front of you suddenly sees the truck and decides not only it must drop to 80 very suddenly but it also needs to swerve half way off the road then picks up speed again so you can't pass him. i'm more scared of the little car than the truck!
it reminds me though of another pet hate. the 'rather chat to person in the passenger seat than concentrate' driver who is so caught up in his chat he doesn't realise he is slowing down, then suddenly realises and speeds up. and then sloooows doooooown agaaaain. thenspeedsup! and by the time he has done this 4 or 5 times you're ready to drive right over the top of him. i often yell at them abusively and have lovely inane chats with them to. not that they hear it.

Firstly, I thought maybe all the people commenting on this issue might well be from Perth, Western Australia. I reckon Perth has the worst drivers in Australia, if not the world. Where do I start? They can't merge - there is NOT a stop sign at the end of the merging lane. You do not stop and wait for a gap, you might sit there all day in peak hour and it really brasses off the people stuck behind you. Having said that some motorists, when they see a car in the merging lane, think its a race and speed up so the car can't merge. They don't seem to comprehend that if the car in the merging lane is in front of their car, the merging car has right of way. I've lost count of how many times I've had slam on the brakes because some d!ckhead won't let me merge. They cannot see past the end of the bonnet. They can't use a roundabout - cars already on the roundabout have right of way. They have no courtesy and no patience. Some drive around all day with their "look at me I'm a d!ckhead" lights on. They just love to barge into the gap someone else has left for stopping distance. They are always in a hurry to get to the next red light - just on that topic Perth now has speed cameras at some traffic light-controlled intersections. Saw one working nicely a few weeks ago on Roe Highway, someone decided to plant their foot to get through on the orange light and will have a speeding ticket for their trouble  Some silly girl in Geraldton had her P-Plates for 4 days and lost her licence for speeding, doing 99km/h in a 60km/h area. There really needs to be proper driver training, not mums and dads who got their licence 40 years ago, passing on bad habits while teaching their kids to drive. I could go on and on but I have just finished night shift and need to sleep now lol.

Hi Mel.. dont hold back.. :D :winker:
Probably the worst thing I found when I was over there is the way that the traffic on the freeways doesn't flow.. One minute you are doing 100 and the next everything is back to 80 then 100 again.. I think it is partly due to what you say about reluctance to let people merge in at on ramps...
I was amazed at how many nose to tail accidents I saw on your freeways (but not surprised in view of the above)

but most of the drivers I've followed behind on an on ramp are only doing 70 or 80kmh when they try to merge with the traffic that's already doing 100kmh on the freeway. :scared:

Changing lanes without indicating or shoulder checking   :mad:GRRRR.
When I learnt to drive, my instructor taught me this simple acronym for lane changing.
M = Mirrors - check them all.
I = Indicate your intention.
S = Shoulder check to see if the space you want to place your vehicle in safe.
S = Start the lane change maneuver.
I do it all the time and it works perfectly.
-
With all the "merging" that happens on our major Freeways such as the "Monash" in Victoria, I struggle to understand why anyone would constantly drive in the Left Lane...
I nearly always travel in the centre lanes so I don't have to worry about everyone merging and only hop into the left lane when I need to get off the Freeway. The right lane is still free for those that want to pass. Makes perfect sense to me.... :-\

This is something many drivers don't do, rather they rely on their mirrors.
A shoulder check is a necessity because you never know what is sitting in your blindspot...

here's another one i hate.a 100kmh speed limit on the freeway, that changes to 80kmh, and then it changes back to 100kmh 10 minutes later. :faint: and the bulk of the freeway speed cameras are in that 80kmh section. :scared:

My car has no blind spots and I've never needed to do a "shoulder check". I understand why many people will think my statement is incorrect but if you adjust the three mirrors correctly you will have a continuous panorama and no blind spot.
The problem is twofold: One, driving instructors do not teach learners to trust what they see in the rear vision mirrors and that the only proper view is first hand by turning your head. My son whom I taught to drive (even though I had been "driving for 40 years") could not convince the driving instructor that took over from me that he could see down his left side!! What if you are driving a windowless van or a truck? How do you suppose truck drivers or bus drivers ever change lanes safely?
The second problem arises from the first because even if they understood that their mirrors were potentially adequate, few car drivers appear to have any idea how to adjust them to get a sensible view. Most people adjust the side mirrors to give them a view of the door handles and in effect barely offers any different or extended view to that which can be seen in the central mirror. :o
Folks, the mirrors are much more useful if they all overlap minimally. Once adjusted this way the so-called blind spot is covered by the side mirror as it should be.
If anyone is convinced I might be right then try it but please continue to drive according to your current method until you have retrained yourself to use the mirrors as they were designed. :goodjob:
-
Hi Pip,
Congrats on starting what has turned out to a hugely popular thread  :goodjob:
I've been driving for 35 years and I am not totally convinced that correctly adjusted mirrors can always eliminate blind spots..
I always try to adjust my mirrors as you have suggested.. I will take particular note over the next month or so to see if looking over the shoulder uncovers any traffic not visible in the mirrors..
-

i do my shoulder check in most situations, i guess old habits but i find i'm right and there is nothing there, and that is because i check the mirrors first. in my first car i didn't/couldn't do this as much though. maybe i just didn't "get" it yet or i think the mirrors weren't good enough. and i even had a couple of near misses from my blind spot as even a quick short shoulder check failed to spot someone coming up the rear a bit too quickly.
but with the i30 i tend to see quite a lot on both sides. i think its due to the funny magnification it has? within a quick few weeks of having the car i realised i could see much more and understood a lot more about my blind spots than i ever did in the older one. so i'm using my mirrors a lot and i think its brilliant. i finally understood what my dad tried to teach me when i was younger about using them to see where you are. as i said i am still using my shoulder check, but i realise i'm not being as critical about it as i do feel quite safe with the mirror check.
except when i'm reversing and the back of the car in some situations can still be tricky for me.
-
I never do shoulder checks, I've got the little blind spot mirrors on wing mirrors, first thing I did when I got my car from the dealer was stick them on, I've always had them on my car's. I was taught by my instructor (15 years ago) to always know what's going on around you by using the mirrors all the time.

I betcha he also said to always do a head check as well....

I believe a head/shoulder check in conjunction with using your mirrors increases the chances of a driver being more aware of what is around him/her...that can only be a good thing... :goodjob:

At 60kmh a car travels 16.67 metres in a second... I don't know exactly how long it takes to turn your head right around and assess the blind spot but I'd rather be offering just a flick of the eyes and a slight turn of the head to maintain my attention to the front.
Does anyone here want to own up to actually, or nearly, rear-ending someone while attempting to change lanes?
It would also be interesting to know if anyone has turned into the car beside after doing a so-called head/shoulder check.
I haven't done either because I can either see or not see a car in either the centre or outside mirror. The centre mirror will see a car further away in the adjacent lane and the outside mirror will see one closer up in what would otherwise be the blind-spot.
When driving on multi-laned roads I regularly update myself by monitoring all three mirrors so by the time I might need to change lanes I already know who's around me most of the time and including the blind spot.
If a head check reveals a car you couldn't see in the side mirror then your mirror is adjusted wrong! Cars are bloody big things... how could it not be seen in a mirror designed just for that?
I don't mean to boast but I attribute in part my proper use of side mirrors for not so much as putting a parking scratch on a car for over 30 years.

I'm not sure if Pip's post is for real in regard to 'No Blind Spots' on his i30 or is meant to raise a little bite of controversy :) and it would need someone far more eloquent and academic in descriptive writing to explain or correctly define why we have the the term 'Blind Spots'.
My driving experience claim of knowledge would be about 40 years :-[ passed my driving test in a big city in the UK .. drove there for 8 years before coming here to WA, since coming here I've gained an advanced drivers licence from the (what was) the road safety council of WA which included high speed road commentry while driving, skid control, defensive action and double d clutch technique through all the above and without wishing to blow my own trumpet too much have a clean Heavy Vehicle licence to drive Semi's and Double B's.
Now I don't wish to be overly critical to you in regard to your 'Blind-Spots' post and this is a very popular thread BUT .. unless you have Truck or Bus mirrors attached to each side of your i30 (not a good look) and I don't mean to be facetious either ............ You do have blind spots my friend.

I couldn't agree more, Ozbrum. EVERY car has blind spots. A shoulder check does not involve "turning your head right around" as Pip suggests. The "flick of the eyes and a slight turn of the head" as suggested by Pip is all it takes. I use BOTH shoulder checks and mirrors when lane changing and am quite comfortable knowing that there is no other vehicle in the space I want to place my car.

The trouble is, cars aren't the only vehicles on our roads, there are also vehicles such as motorcycles and bicycles....
And pip, people fail to see vehicles all the time..even when they aren't using mirrors.....Look how many people will pull out in front of another car or even a truck at an intersection.

Your credentials to enter the discussion are exemplary but with respect I maintain that correctly adjusted side mirrors can eliminate any blind spot.
I probably need to define what I mean by blind spot. I'm defining it as not being able to see a car about the c pillar area at all. A car that can be right beside you yet remain undetected with the car's mirrors.
By proper adjustment of the mirrors a car cannot "hide" in this area. I'm not saying that some part of the car cannot be unseen but I'm saying it cannot remain undetected.
My side mirrors are adjusted out sufficiently far enough such that the rear of a car beside me will be visible in the centre mirror at the same time as the front will have appeared in the side mirror. Once the car has moved further forward (assume) to pass from the side mirror's view it is then visible through the side window. So at no position is the car beside me undetectable. Winding the mirrors out like this also allows a view of the next lane out again as well.:goodjob:
I might add that the i30 mirrors are easier to adjust in this manner because of the inherently wide view.
I expected to get a little push-back on this but it's long been a hobby-horse of mine so I thought I'd risk my arm.
I'm sure most people adjust their side mirrors to simply replicate what can already be seen in the centre mirror without thought. If you can see the sides of your car then you have ensured you have large blind spots and not the minimal I have defined.
-
You're forgetting about motorcycles etc, pip......they can easily hide in areas that a car would be visible....
-
You're forgetting about motorcycles etc, pip......they can easily hide in areas that a car would be visible....
No not really, the mirror should not be wound out so far that this could happen. The whole reason is to eliminate the blind spot. If you wind out too far you just create a new one. You want neither a "gap" between the centre mirror and the side mirror nor have the side mirror overlapping the centre mirror so far that it doesn't see out far enough to the side to see a car beside you in the next lane - the "blind spot".
I might have tended to mislead by overstating it a little to make my point... let me say it again...the side mirror should be wound out such that it still, and sufficiently, overlaps the centre mirror that the blind spot is covered but not so little as to allow a car to "get in front of" the side mirror before it is visible directly through the side window. One should only be able to see the sides of your car, as a rule-of-thumb, by rocking your head all the way to the side window. As I keep saying, most can see the door handles from the normal driving position. This is not right and you might as well leave them folded in for what real use they will be.
I have mine adjusted a little further than this so that there may be less overlap but I am very confident with how I adjust them that I can see all around me as have been doing this ever since I learnt to drive and pushed panel vans around for many years.
There is no other way to do it if you have no bloody windows!
And I might re-add my caution: if you readjust your mirrors it will take some time before you can properly interpret what you see with the new view. You will have to relearn it.
-
I believe that no matter how good a driver you think you are accidents will happen and do at the most unexpected time so you should always be aware of what is going on around you.
You don't know what they are thinking and you can't tell them what they should be doing so...............
To be safe, drive within your limitations and treat all others as if they are going to do something out of the ordinary by keeping a beady eye on the twerp in the other car.
-
I tend to agree the blind spot is a furphy. It is a term introduced to explain why we sometimes don't see a vehicle beside us. I definitely agree that correct adjustment of your side mirrors will eliminate it.
However, let me throw another point into this mix.
I had an AU 11Falcon and there was something about the size/shape/ placement of the mirrors which prevented me (in my fully back seating position) from getting full coverage of the rear view. This was compounded by the fact that the "B" pillar was right beside my right ear and about 30 cm away. Which meant a head turn, no matter how brief or comprehensive did not provide the information I needed. Their may well be other cars like this and if we don't maintain the brief head turn habit may one day find ourselves caught out.
However, the i30, with both its outside mirrors designed for wider view, is easy to adjust for a full spread behind me.
Having said all that, if you use your mirrors constantly (I have a vague idea I heard some advanced defensive driving instructor say, every 5-7 seconds), you should build and maintain a mental image of what's behind you and whether or not they are likely to "suddenly" appear alongside you. Also, in conjunction with the regular mirror checking, you never move your eyes away from the forward position without taking a mental snapshot of everything in front of you which should ring alarm bells if anything looks a bit "off"
Re-reading this I'm not sure I've been as clear as I should have been but I guess you guys will tell me.
Later I'll tell you a story about how this causes some friction between my wife and me. :-[

Lets face it we are all trying to say we are AWARE of each other on the road and we want to know who is coming along side of us at all time.
I accept the overall picture of what you say in regard to mirrors Pip and I'm sure you are a very good driver.
My final point on 'Blind Spots' and 'Mirrors', is within the road rules of WA and it is on the Driver Examination sheet for you to gain a WA drivers licence is 'Checking of Blind Spots' ... If you don't physically show yourself as moving your head even your shoulder to clearly and distinctly be checking your 'blind spots' then the examiner will fail you the same as if you've driven through a 'stop sign' or didn't put your seat belt on ..... and you can argue till the cows come home about 'mirror adjustment' BUT you will have failed your driving test.
We in the West are particularly BAD drivers and the car you can see on your right will in a millisecond zoom passed you on your left. A 'blind spot' to drivers over here is when you poke yourself in the eye.
Cheers

Drivers that rely solely on their mirrors (or not at all), please take NOTE!
Doing a head check in combination with using your mirrors might just prevent an accident of the sort that happens in this video.
While clipping a car might just result in an exchange of paint, clipping a motorcycle can have disastrous consequences...

Ok guys, many valid points of view and lively discussion on the mirror subject. I think we have explored the topic to the point that there's little left unsaid and I do hope and suspect that some of us, and particularly those of us with less experience, will have had their awareness of the use and adjustment of the side mirrors heightened. If so, that's good. :goodjob:
Thank you to all whom contributed.

I'd like to say something that might elicit differing views once again.
This has been discussed elsewhere but I'd like to bring it up here and say that unless the conditions warrant it, lights should not be used during the day. :scared: Say what?
I know it's even law in some places but this does not alter my opinion. My objection is based on the confusion I have when the tail lights are permanently lit and then the stop lights come on. If I've been checking the mirrors () or the speed and looked up I often have a moment of hesitation while I decide whether I'm seeing the tail lights or is it now the stop lights?
This split second confusion does not present itself at night because the stop lights appear subjectively to be significantly brighter at night but during the day in bright conditions the difference between tail and stop lights is not always immediately apparent. The difference between off and lit however is obvious.
I'd like to roll into this the design choices made by some manufacturers where the turn indicators are placed concentrically within the tail/stop light assembly. It may have something to do with the increasing use of LEDs but I find that on some cars (mostly German) the turn indicator is "swamped" by the stop lights.
And yet another to do with lights: Does anyone else find that some LED stop lights are so bright as to dazzle you? This I find this particularly when the rear lights are high up so that they are near to eye height. Sometimes stopped at lights I find it necessary to look away to avoid having my retinas drilled by the car in front.
-

I'll agree with you on this one, pip....but not so much for your reasons but more so that I believe a car's distance away from you (with lights on) is more difficult to judge.
Also a consideration, most motorcycles have their headlights hardwired permanently on for "supposedly" better visibility during the day....Now if cars also have their lights on, surely a motorcycle will just blend in with the lights of the car further behind? :-\

If a head check reveals a car you couldn't see in the side mirror then your mirror is adjusted wrong! Cars are bloody big things... how could it not be seen in a mirror designed just for that?
well in my old car i have. but in the instance i mentioned i could see in the left hand mirror there was traffic in the left lane but back somewhat, that i had to merge into. quick head check and confirm nothing on my side. then start to move over and get horn blasted as suddenly there is a car right there on my side, which my mirror failed to show someone suddenly appeared into that spot.
however in the i30 i have yet to have this issue, the mirrors are different and do show more. maybe i did have the old mirrors set up wrong but i know i played with the fords mirrors countlessly and just never 'got' it, whereas with the i30 i'm still slightly in disbelief that the mirror thing actually works!
on a side note i find it difficult to see properly in a falcon ute as well but admittedly haven't been in one enough to play with the mirrors more.
i do think the i30 still has a blind spot, its just very tiny compared to the fords, and the cars can't fit into it
anyway....i use both mirrors and head check...and it works very well :goodjob:
p.s just noticed everyone is moving on... :-[
-

i will agree with this. i find the distance more difficult to judge as well, especially on a very long flattish part of the highway at certain times of day.
e.g i just can't tell if i have time to overtake the car in front of me or not. if there is a dip or slight curve in the road then that helps immensely, i can judge the length of the road; but if its dead on i can't tell.
-
p.s just noticed everyone is moving on... :-[
Don't let that stop you, snow....it was only pip that made the decision that the mirror discussion had run it's course, I'm more than happy to argue it further if need be...

Don't let that stop you, snow....it was only pip that made the decision that the mirror discussion had run it's course, I'm more than happy to argue it further if need be...
don't you mean debate it further.
-
Nah, argue... :D
Not into debates with the masses......

because they end up becoming mass debates..... :-[

Or for our UK friends... Tosser... :goodjob:

..anyway....i use both mirrors and head check...and it works very well :goodjob:
Maybe this sums it up.
-
You're forgetting about motorcycles etc, pip......they can easily hide in areas that a car would be visible....
not on purpose rusty lol
i think all car drivers should have to be motorcyclists first,
then they would be more "aware"
and safer drivers.
another topic for you, how many of us also have a bike?

i don't, doubt i could even lift one.
however when i was a teen my father had one for years and took me for long pillion rides quite often. also had an uncle with a bike and sidecar and had some rides with him to, and a lot of family friends had bikes at the time. i think it did help me be more aware of bikes on the road now as a non bike rider, than if i had never had any interaction with them at all. obviously some things i can't know but i pay attention to them on the road.

I feel the same, but it's never gonna happen....

They come in all sizes, Snow....I'm sure if you're only slight in stature we could fit you up for a scooter...lol
Anyhow, it's good that you're at least aware of motorcycles.....plenty aren't. There's also plenty out there that will purposely make life harder for them.
Cheers :)
-
a scooter!
i'll pass thank you.
its not just my size, i have some health issues for not ever trying to learn. i knew a girl who was much smaller than me who rode a 500cc suzuki but damn she was a tough little thing. was little jealous of her actually zooming around on that.
-
Ah, be daring! You only live once.... :D Health issues aside, if you can ride a push bike, you can ride a scooter....
Btw, my brother who lives in Tasmania (and has MAJOR health issues) rides a scooter and up until recently it was his only means of transport.
Cheers anyway :goodjob:

2. Someone who throws lightly (as with the palm upward)
3. [Brit, vulgar] Insulting terms of address for people who are stupid or irritating or ridiculous

A report came out of Europe some time back and it said "motorcyclists made better drivers", something to that effect, anyhow.... :)

One thing that really gets on my goat is the proliferation of wire rope barriers in Australia....
While these may be effective for cars, they can be deadly if hit by a motorcyclist.....
Logic would tell you that barriers should only be used if the danger of hitting something off the road is greater...
Not the case here in Victoria...
-
Yeah. I agree. Don't like wire barriers.
Thay can't be that much cheaper than armco and it would seem to me it would be easier to unbolt and replace a section of armco than however much cable you'd need to do if it was damaged.
-
Are they spreading everywhere up your way too?
-
^^^^
I see them around but I haven't paid that much attention as to their growth.
Just don't see the point.
-
No worries, I'm probably more aware of them cos' I know how much damage they'll likely do if you hit one while riding....
-

A bloke hit one down here a couple of years ago doing like 200 KPH on a bike.. nothing left of him apparently.. :'(
-
I remember that, Daz.....There was also one poor bugger in New Zealand that ended up cut in half..... :scared:
-
As far as I know the only one stretch of road locally with this is on is the approach road to the Mersey Tunnel.
The central verge isn't wide enough to put in the solid type so had to compromise.
-
Oh ok, that surprises me cos' the stuff apparently originated from over there... :-\
Cheers :)

being see these start to pop up in central queensland :'(
i think they use them as they 'look' nicer for tourists on the drive.

another pet hate.
i must admit i do this myself on occasion but not when a car is actually sitting there.
and that is when turning right into a side street and cutting the corner. i thought a car was going to take my front end off yesterday as he was turning into the side street and came in too close to my lane rather than the opposite side. and i was turning left, not sitting in the middle. i wonder if he saw me at all.
-
Supposedly they are cheaper than the alternatives....You gotta wonder if that's true long term though as they appear to need much more maintenance.

This is one ad that really bugged me when it was aired....Blame is laid solely on the motorist for supposedly speeding yet surely it's mostly the young girl's fault for not looking? :-\
Wipe out 5 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-izycNgKsyA#)
-
he was speeding,so the accident is automatically his fault. if the girl on the bike was a car,it still would be his fault for speeding. remember Russ its an offence to speed,so he is in the wrong and going to be charged with culpable driving and will loose his licence for a very long time,he may even go to jail for a while. in America its called vehicular homicide, your off to jail for a very, very long time. her fault? if that was somebody you knew on the bike, would it still be their fault? i think not. :scared: :faint:
-
I can see where Russ is coming from.. I guess they are both in the wrong.. Put yourself in the drivers shoes Steve..
If you were doing 50 in a 50 zone and that girl pulled out in front of you and you couldn't avoid her then it would not be your fault would it...
-
not if your going at the speed limit, but that doesn't mean she would be alive either dazz. at 30kmh she would probably be in the morgue still. IMHO.
-

my opinion in this post, is just an opinion.i hope ive not afended anyone.but the speed limit was 60kmh and he was doing 65kmh,that made the driver be at fault and not the girl. . even though she didn't see him approaching the intersection [and give way] she wont be found at fault. because he was speeding
-
One thing that bugs me is that the car driver is immediately the "guilty" party no matter what the circumstances are.
What happened to "innocent" until proved?
-
thats a good point.
-

this is something that has bothered me for a long time now. when i was in school it was drilled into us 'look to the right, look to the left, look to the right again' with emphasis that cars rules the road and we must be careful where we walked/rode. i do NOT see this being a critical factor in road safety anymore, rather the emphasis put on the driver to always be alert that a child may at anytime run onto the road e.g running after their ball, with no responsibility to be laid on the child for obeying road dangers. frankly it pisses me off as it seems older children abuse this. i hate it when they cross the road in front of you almost challenging you to run to them over. i've had to literally stop once here in my own town for a teenage group, one girl in particular dawdled so slowly then looked at me like 'oh right you're in a car?'
-

Personally I attribute the majority of the blame to the girl.....she failed to give way at a stop sign. Pushbike or not, you're required to stop and give way to all vehicles.
As for the motorist, how would they prove he was speeding, especially if he was only over by 5 k's?
As an aside, failing to give way is a 3 demerit point offence, exceeding the speed limit by less than 10kph, is only 1 demerit point....

I reckon this is a great motorcycle awareness commercial that was put together by the Motorcycle Council of NSW.

i see surferdude and snow cherry were talking about the 'airport roundabout'
well its gone now... they are like 80% of the way finished from what i can see in removing it and putting the new intersection in...
its much better now, although i never had a problem with the roundabout... it worked and it worked well just idiots didnt know how to use it properly/change lanes safely

It wasn't the using of it that worried me.
Just that every time you went through, they'd have changed where the lanes went on exit, not necessarily with a change in signage.
