Title: AM Radio Reception
Post by: FLYPEJOCK on December 10, 2010, 23:04:27
Hi,

I am in Brisbane and my AM radio reception has deteriorated badly over the past few months.  I am convinced that something has happened to the unit or antenna but my f**kwit dealer tells me that the AM signal has weakened as they are shutting off the AM signal entirely in early 2011.  I didn't believe a word of this clap trap and checked google when I got off the call.  2015 seems to be the date when the AM signal will be switched off in Australia.

Has anyone on this forum experienced issues with AM reception on the i30?

Does anyone know if the roof mounted aerial is both AM/FM?

Thanks

Hi Guys,

My a.m reception in the i30 and on the household radios is rubbish and we live 90km south of Perth WA, Our analogue signal is due to be switched off in 2013, We don't listen much to a.m only a little of the ABC first thing in the morning and there's always a background hissing/buzzing sound there, I'm not too worried.

I thought you only needed an antenna for f.m reception ? Try unscrewing the little bee-sting aerial to see if there is a difference with or without it ?

You need an antenna (of some sort) to receive any radio signal. Same one will be used for both AM and FM.

If you have that station set on a memory button, try retuning it. But I must admit that in the UK we are moving away from different signals etc. With the new signals being switched on they tend to cut the power output for the older frequencies so as not to interfere with the new signals if coming from the same transmitter mast.

Starting at the 7500 service (coincidentally?), I've started getting sporadic interference on the AM band.  It doesn't seem to related to anything in particular (like trams which always cause a problem).  I've tried loosening & re-tightening the antenna but it didn't make any difference.  Sometimes rough roads seem to start it but it might be just my imagination.  Intend to talk to the dealer at the next service.

Hi,
I'm at Caloundra and use AM pretty much all the time (mostly 4KQ but occasionaly 4BH). No signal pr reception issues. In fact the reception is better than I had in my Impreza. I fairly often drive to Brisbane as well and get clear reception all the way down.
So, I'd not be accepting any stories about them winding the signal strength down yet.
But you could e-mail the stations concerned and ask them to confirm or deny it.

Probably should clarify something here.
AFAIK the AM signal will continue. We get AM and FM. All signals will be upgraded to Digital from Analogue but they'll still be AM & FM.
However, I guess that means our AM (analogue) car radios will be no good then.

FM digital has already started, but its not stoped my/our radios from receiving analog transmition. am stations should be the same.   but who knows later on down the track.  :scared:

I'm having exactly the same problem as flypejock with my AM reception I don't listen to AM a lot. but like to keep my ear on the cricket from time to time (not that it's worth listening to if you're an Aussie  )

The problem is not a weak signal, just a signal that breaks up a lot. I can get it to happen if I tap on the dashboard or even if I thump the front seats hard. It also goes wonky if I go over speed bumps etc.

I have no problem with FM, CD or AUX/iPod, so I don't think it's a bad earth as Lorain has suggested. 15k service is due in a month, so I'll get the dealer to have a look at it.

Ugly Mongrel - sounds like you have the same symptoms as me.  I will try banging the dash and see if it makes a difference.

Mine is going in to have a rear door seal replaced and the garage have undertaken to look at the AM radio reception when it is in. The service advisor did concede that they have had a few issues of this type recently.

G'day FLYPEJOCK....you've aroused my curiousity, what's the story with the door seal? The reason I ask is because I've had an issue with a front door seal and Hyundai refused to cover it under warranty....
Cheers  :)

Just revisiting this. Where did you get the info re switching off the analogue signals?
According to the official website there are NO plans to switch off the analogue signal in the near future.

And at present ONLY the capitals have digital signals.

It is BS that they are shutting down AM radio as others have said above.  I get brilliant AM reception in my i30cw in fact the best I've had in any car, I can still get Adelaide radio from Morgan SA which is 160km by road.  Don't let the dealer put you off, maybe an antenna connection is loose?
