Title: Comprehensive Insurance
Post by: Surferdude on January 22, 2011, 06:59:31
Have just received our insurance renewals for the i30 and Corolla.
I was not surprised when I traded the Subaru Impreza RV that the insurance on the i30 was considerably lower - given that the scoobie was a 2004 model and the i30 was new.
I was also surprised that the i30 was much cheaper than the wife's 2005 Corolla sedan.

It's still the same.
Now I'm happy enough to share some figures with you. Might be some interesting comparisons out there.
To set the scene I won't deal with those super cheap mobs who advertise on tv and put fliers in your letterbox but I shop around the majors.
Current renewal figures...

i30         $285.50
Corolla   $412.03

I have spoken to the insurer and queried the figures. Thay say they base the premiums on historical data (mostly their own) but also take into account the industry averages.
They simply say that their repair figures on i30 are that much lower.
Obviously the amount of cars on the road of each model would have some bearing, as would cost of parts and so forth and I expected the gap would shrink as both cars got older and more data became available for the i30.
But it hasn't.
Not complaining though.
Just need to convince the wife to exchange her beloved Corolla for an i30. :sweating:

Interesting figures Trev .. i30 and Tiida were line ball at about $330 each..(through Allianz via a broker)  when I switched to the Hybrid.. :D they said the monthly premium would stay the same but it went up about $13 p/m so the Toyota must be around $485 p/a which is ok seeing it is worth around 40k to replace ..

I will probably swap to RACT when renewal time comes around as a bulk discount should save me quite a bit  :goodjob:

Pretty much my reaction, too.
But it's RACQ Insurance so we can't really go wrong.

There are some helpful contributing factors.

All house and car insurance with them.
Both of us have Lifetime Rating 1
My wife is an RACQ Gold Member.
We are Senior's Card Holders. (only because the RACQ told us how much more they'd give us off if we were.

$647 for me (after ringing and managing to get them to drop it, their original quote was just silly)....The broker could do it slightly cheaper than that, but I still have 18 months of the write off replacement left so didn't want to risk it.

Mind you, after I paid I found out that AAMI has been taken over by Suncorp.....and I hate Suncorp.

Market value Rusty.

Had Agreed Value cover for years but there are some overriding clauses normally which IMO made it not worthwhile so we switched and kept it that way when we went back to RACQ.

All the major insurers spread their exposure across one another and even overseas. Don't know the actual deatils of how that works but I can understand the principle.

I think they actually insure with other insurers against the risk of a natural disaster or major catastrophe.. I think all of our premiums will go up  :'(

Ta Trev....When I took out comp insurance on my i30, the girl from Apia tried to convince me to go market value as they have new for old replacement for the first couple of years. I decided I'd still go for Agreed value as I figured there's no way they'd agree to $30,000 coverage after the new for old coverage ran out.

My limited knowledge of how the insurance market operates is that premiums WILL RISE as the companies will want to recoup their additional outlay within 12 months!!!!!!!!!!

But do they put the premium down when they DON'T have a bad year and are making large £££ $$$$$ profits?

They've covered themselves with glory in the SE Qld floods. I know a few people who are very glad they're with them right now.

Had house insurance with them (and a mortgage but thats another issue). Had two claims and didn't like how they delt with either of them.

First was storm damage to the roof (I had no spare tiles). They sugested I get up on the roof and make it safe incase of more rain. I said hey isn't that what I pay you for? I have already had a look and done my best, but I am not a roofer and if it does rain and any further damage occurs then I want to be covered for that too on the basis that I did as you sugested. They had a roofer at my house in an hour (why didn't they do that to start with?).

Then we got broken into and the loss investigator was a real bitch. I had everything required for her, and she still wanted more. Went beyond what I would class as a reasonable investigation given that the police had already investigated.

Then there is the fact that they were stinging me $200 more than another company.

Sure I don't have flood cover, but if I flood were all in a world of hurt. I think the only thing making Suncorp look good is they offer 'lazy insurance' for people who didn't bother to look into what they were buying, hence those with Suncorp are relieved that they have dodged a bullet. I am sure there are other companies out there doing the same thing, only cheaper.

Hi folks,

Rather than start a fresh I thought I would just continue with this one...

Our insurance is due for renewal on both our cars this month.. a year or two ago when we had the 2008 SLX Crdi and 2007 Nissan Tiida it was only around A$340 each for Full comprehensive insurance (market value) with $250 Excess (we are both over 50 y/o with full no claim bonuses)

Like most things with inflation and upgrading both cars to the 2010 Camry HYbrid and MY11 SX CW Petrol 2.0 the premiums have crept up through Allianz (via Broker) to around A$900 combined on the latest renewal..

We had already decided to go with RACT this time as they were the best on house insurance and offer 10% off everything if you combine house, contents and car.. I was hoping to save some money all up but they came in at nearly A$1200 with a A$400 excess

But.. the difference was I decided to go with agreed Value which was A$37,000 and A$24,000 versus market value of A$29,000 and A$18,500  :disapp: With the 10% off accross the board probably costing us a bit over $100 extra all up but think I've done the right thing.

I just bit the bullet and went for it as we pay by the month (no penalty) and so probably only $10 p/m more..

I will see what next years renewal looks like and shop around again if I get a sniff that there are better deals out there from well known insurers.

That includes comprehensive glass cover on both vehicles which allows multiple windscreen claims in any year with no excess and covers all glass so if someone smashes a side window to steal something out of the car that is covered excess free too (which I don't think is standard in the industry)

Dazz, We just got our H&C renewal from RACQ. $80 increase over last year so I went in and talked to them.
They explained how the floods etc have affected their costs in the way they "spread the load across other insurers ( I knew about that so it made sense).
Anyway we talked about excess options and we've gone with a higher excess on both house and contents (we're really only concerned about total loss anyway, and are SAVING $130 (nearly a 25% drop over last year).
It'll be interesting to see how our car insurance premiums jump up when they fall due. I'm less keen to increase the excess on them.
Title: Re: Comprehensive Insurance

That is interesting Trev.. I think all the RACs do somethings together but are all separate identities?
Title: Re: Comprehensive Insurance

Hm, I'm sure I asked this question already before, but could anyone tell me, what does your comprehensive insurance for the car, cover?

Ok, you probably have different stuff included but is the "normal car insurance" covered in that price or do you pay "normal" insurance + comprehensive insur. + let's say additional $$ for windows, lights, replacement car while your car is being fixed.. ?
Title: Re: Comprehensive Insurance
Post by: beerman on July 02, 2011, 09:27:21
I also think that they smash the premiums up in the hope that you just pay them. Then if you ring up and complane or have other quotes they make 'adjustments' because you are a good customer. If you don't then all better for them...

I get an insurance broker to check each year, just to be sure (though I found out recently they are owened by Suncorp, so now I'm less keen).....I have been with AAMI for 20 years, so I give them the last right of reply.

Mine covers just about everything and you only pay the excess if you are at fault in an accident. I had the option to pay a little extra for the replacement car but as we have two cars and only I work (part time) we could live with one car for a few weeks.. :goodjob:

I think around A$500 per annum for each car with agreed value is cheap compared to many European members rates.. :winker:

Yes, great prices. That's what I wanted to ask. Our "regular" (normal, basic) insurance is for i30 let's say $AU 600 (of course with max discount) + another AU$ 600 for comprehensive.

For your Toyota, it would probably be those prices ×2. Btw, great car. Saw it in some movie the other day and I remembered

Bit cheaper in Tassie because car theft is less prevalent and much less traffic so I assume they consider less risk of damage?? (It has always been that way)  :D (Was dirt cheap a couple of years ago)

It varies by postcode too. We were in Sydney for 14 years at postcode 2154 and there wasn't a big jump when we moved back to Qld. Some others we knew were in different postcodes and paying considerably more for similar vehicles.

i got comp for a smidge over $700 with  a secured loan and inner city melbourne.  very good price.

i never go with rac variants- they price to their targeted high proit low risk suburbs at expense to the low risk high expense (payout) markets.

(i worked in insurance for a few years and know the way it works and risk calculators etc) the biggest sham of all is multi policy discounts offered by rac products.

$1900 for an i30 crdi auto in my suburb compared to the next highest $1300 then $900 and even had one under my price but didnt trust the underwirter of the policy- not the company selling it.

Its never best to shop on price, especially for insurance, you need the benefits when you need them most, not when you dont use them, so paying $50 for a windscreen and maximum ncb/rating protection cost me all up $30 more than the cheapest but through a reputable company. sure its not aami or others who offer ncb/rating one for life, but i paid for it to be protected and thats as many claims at fault in a year and its still protected.

so $280 odd for sunshine coast is about right for the ammount of i30's in that ara and risk associated with the a car in that area.

There are a lot of i30's in this area so does that fit with what you are saying? And I AM with RACQ and shopped around pretty heavily (one of the benefits of being semi retired). And RACQ are pretty well respected, as well as being the cheapest. Yes we got all sorts of allowances but they were on offer at other companies as well.
You can get cheaper with Youi and another budget on line mob but as far as I'm concerned they've yet to prove themselves.

Yeah that Can be right, a large volume of similar cars in one area and low claim rate can make cheap premiums. Also you rarely find they are all insured with the same company unless the company is targeting that market. So heavily discounting there to win business at expense if other areas.

Are they all the same spec and transmission too? Eg all manual sx and yours auto slx. Same goes deisel and petrol, hatch vs sedan. They can all affect premium ultimately. Same as gender and age. The risk engines are endless, especially if you then factor in accessories and modifications. But computers do it all, but learning the engine parameters if you can helps understand when you leave the business

I can't speak for the MOB with each company but there seems to be a pretty fair spread of engine and drive train options as well as a wide age bracket.

Pretty sure. Most hire cars have a sticker on th eback window which gives them away.
Plenty of Getz hire cars get(z)ing around :whistler:

There are a lot of government owned i30's around. esp in Brisbane but I imagine they would be self insured and not come into the figures.

I used to like it when they had an obvious Autorent Hertz sticker or something on the back so some people gave you courtesy for being a tourist ... but  a lot of them now (down here anyway) just have a very small barcode sticker on the back window which is barely visible.

That's great John (for Sydney)

I mentioned earlier in the thread that I have commited to go with RACT on both our cars from later this month at a bit over $1000 all up after combo discounts etc..  and a $400 excess.. Bit dearer than I had hoped but as I said talking Agreed value and excellent glass cover..

Anyway, got another email regarding Coles insurance so decided to get quotes just in case they were heaps cheaper but for the same cover on the Hybrid ($37K agreed value) and only one windscreen per annum it was around $500 with $500 excess  :disapp:

AND when I tried to get a quote on Trish's CW it was + so much for this and + so much for that and they would only let me go to $22K agreed value not $24K as nominated with RACT. Then when I put that it had a spoiler and alloys etc.. it said please ring us ... :P (so I decided not worth bothering as was looking like it was going to be close to the RACT figure with slighly higher excess and lesser agreed value on Trish's car
