Has anyone had an issue with their rear quarter panel glass?
The one on the drivers side of my i30 has what appears to be a sort of rainbow effect showing and no amount of cleaning will remove it so I can only assume it's actually in the glass.
I have my windows tinted and so at first assumed that this was somehow causing it. Needless to say I took it in and complained and they took one glance at it and said it isn't the tint as the tint doesn't extend into the corners of the window.
As it had a couple of bubbles in the tint anyhow, he then peeled the tint off and he was right, the rainbow effect was still there.
Anyhow, to cut a long story short, I took it in to my local Hyundai Dealer yesterday and after having a good look he said he'd make some enquiries.
Here's hoping Hyundai come to the party..... :undecided:

Here's a pic of the window....If you ignore the reflection of the fern for the moment, you should be able to see the markings I was referring to.....

Hi Russ.. I can see it quite clearly but not sure it would worry me being it is only in that rear quarter window?
Be interested to see if anyone else has noticed it (never mentioned before) and if it would worry them :winker:
-
Yeah I see it rusty, looks like oily substance floating on water.... Gonna go out and look at mine now you've mentioned it ....
Be interested to hear water Hyundai say about it
-
It's pretty noticeable, Daz, more so in the flesh..... :fum:
Are these windows laminated? because it's as if there's moisture between 2 layers...... :undecided:

It's a wonder you hadn't noticed it before
In the photo kind of looks like it is on the outside?

On my i30 I had started to see a little of this on the rear screen, just above that channel that holds on to the water and had assumed it was the water retention having an effect on the black colouration in the window. It did not however extend into the clear glass of the screen. I think that the windows are laminated and that the natural expansion and compression of the glasses by temperature do start to have an effect on the black sections...................
-
Thanks Brian, that's interesting..... :)
Daz...I'd noticed it ages ago, sometime after the windows were tinted. I then wrongly assumed the window just needed a good clean.
When I eventually did clean it, it had no effect whatsoever. I then assumed it must have had something to do with the tint so I figured I'd just put up with it until after summer was over and things had quietened down, and then I'd simply get it fixed under the tint warranty.
As I've mentioned, the problem wasn't the tint.... :undecided:

Not sure about the root cause, but I think it's about the "light" which we can see or cannot see. I'm wondering if you can always see the rainbow effect ? Or not everytime ?
My sunglass has the filter effect, when I wear it, I see almost all the windows of cars (most of them have tint) on the street just like what your pic shows. When I take off my sunglass, I see nothing on those windows.
Also, sometimes when I look at the sky with my sunglass, I see some colors which I cannot see without the sunglass.
-
Yes you are quite right in complaining that would annoy me too
good luck i hope you get it sorted
-
If the glass is laminated, it is probably distortion in the plastic sheet bteween the two sheets of glass.
-
Lets hope you get more joy with this one Russ :goodjob:(at least they can't blame the size of your bum this time)
-
Thanks all for your comments...... :D
I guess it's now wait and see what they say time....fingers crossed they do something about it!
Oh, and Daz, it wasn't so much my bum, but more the way I get in and out.... :winker: :p

Yes, it's visible all the time.....

In that case, it's supposed to be a faulty glass, they should replace a new one for you.
-
Hi Rusty, I'm with you I would want it fixed, I don't like faults with my car.
If it was obvious, I would want it fixed. good luck :goodjob:
-
If you press on the glass, does the rainbow seem to shift?
It could be what's called "Brewsters Fringes" (an effect created when light passes through two panes of glass of the same thickness, the resulting light refraction becoming visible as a rainbow effect).

Not to be confused with "brewers droop"... :whistler:

how did you find that out Steve? :goodjob: google.
-
Thanks Trish! :D
As to SS's (Steve Senior) question...hmm, I'll have to try that in the morning.... :undecided: :goodjob:
And Daz, it can't be brewer's droop as I don't drink beer...... :P

Haven't heard back from the dealer so it's looking like I'll have to chase them up...grrrr

I reckon they are still looking into it... :winker: :D

Groan.....

Left myself "open" for that one..... :whistler:

That's probably a "reflection" on Rusty's relationship with the dealer. :winker:

Are you insinuating that I'm a "pane" ? :whistler:
-
I'm shattered!!! :blubber:
-
My guess is that the glass is toughened - not laminated.
I once visited Pilkingtons and saw the process - the glass panels are heated by a matrix of high temperature burners which change the "hardness" of the glass in a pattern. If the glass breaks - it breaks into small pieces rather than with jagged or sharp edges.
The pattern in toughened glass can often be seen through high quality polarised glasses.
I think you are seeing the result of a faulty manufacturing process.
-
Thanks for that, Alan... :goodjob:
-
Good news, I called in to the dealer yesterday and he told me that although he hadn't heard back from Hyundai as yet, he'd ordered the glass as he wasn't anticipating any problems.
He did say that the tint wouldn't be replaced as the warranty only covers the glass but after I had a bit of a whinge he said he'd see what he could do...... :)
So, fingers crossed....
-
Sounds good Rusty (or should I say looks good)
-
excellent news.... Hope the new one's aren't thus blighted..... :scared: :scared: :faint: :faint:
-
Received a phonecall yesterday letting me know the new glass has arrived. Now I just have to wait 2 weeks before they can install it.
No mention was made about the replacement tint so I'll probably have to arrange for that myself...oh well! :undecided:
-
Well at least you've got some movement rusty..... :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:
-
Still good news anyway Russ :goodjob:
-
success. :goodjob:
-
Thought I'd contact the Tint Professor via email for a quote on tinting the window yesterday....$55.00.... :faint:
I've just replied pointing out that by my reckoning, going by the cost of getting all the windows done at $295.00, it should be more like $25.00 for that piddling little window.
I wonder what sort of response I'll get back from them? :whistler:
EDIT: Got a response back and he's told me they'll do it for $25.00.... :goodjob:
Sometimes it pays to have a bit of cheek....
-
:goodjob: But if it was me I'd buy a foot square piece for 5 bucks and do it myself :whistler:
-
Don't worry, I thought about doing that... :whistler:
-
at least all of the tint will be the same by getting them to do it Russ. :) $25.00 is a good price. IMO. :happydance:
-
While still probably overpriced, it's at least a bit more realistic than the original quote.... :undecided:
Ya never know, Hyundai may still come to the party, not holding my breath though..... :whistler:

so, any luck? :whistler:

The car is booked in for next Friday afternoon so I'll let you know after that.... :)
-
Well, had the window replaced last Friday and of course Hyundai wouldn't do anything about the tint so it looks like I'm off to the Tint Professor sometime down the track.
Just had a closer look at the window and it looks a little secondhand...hmmm, I wonder... :undecided:
-
Maybe they foiund a window of opportunity to source one from a wreckers yard :winker: (but I doubt it)

Saw one on a tow truck yesterday which would be good for a few parts (from the windscreen back) :p
-
Finall got around to having the quarter panel window tinted last week.
I just turned up out of the blue as I was down that way on other business and luckily they were able to squeeze me in.
I'd no sooner got settled with the newspaper and it was finished., must've taken all of 5 minutes....
So, all done and 25 dollars lighter..... :goodjob:
-
Geez I do hope the strange light effect doesn't appear on this new pane :whistler:
-
Same here, Daz....and you had better not jinx me... :p
