Hi All,

I have had water swishing around in my tailgate now for the best part of 9 - 10 months. There is no water visible in the boot but when you open and close the tailgate it is clear to hear.  When it was in for its 1st service last March, I mentioned it to the Service manager. After it being checked, I was advised it was the design of the boot and the water should come out of a drain channel at the black rubber, just below the handle. Sure enough, some water does come out there when the boot is slammed shut but with the weather we have here in Scotland ( Constant rain in past few months) the problem shows no sign of ever drying out.  It's the same when I wash the car with a hose. I personally just don't think water should be able to get in in the first place.

Has anybody else encountered this problem or do you think the garage is trying to fob me off ?

Regards,

Trev

I've not

Have you can checked the seal around the rear window.

As the glass is pressed onto the frame you may need to get a small stiff piece of cardboard between the glass and the frame and run it around to see if there are any gaps in the sealant.

This problem has been posted before but more of water in the boot area:

I know your is in the tail gate but try this:

Remove parcel shelf, rear boot floor covering and spare wheel and lower back seats.

Get in boot and close the hatch.

Get someone to spray the car with a hose pipe and see if you can identify where water may be getting in.

I think you will find it is water in the area housing the soft touch mechanism behind the Hyundai badge as reported here

Thanks for replies guys. I just cannot see where the water is coming in from but I've been back to my garage again who have said there is nothing to worry about as it would be covered by the 5 year warranty.  Fair enough I said, but what if rust doesn't show until year 6 or 7  :fum:
Anyway, they assured me the water wasn't actually in the tailgate but in the handle and once again advised me it was the design of the tailgate/handle :scared:
Strange, in all the years I've been driving, I've NEVER had any water ingress.

Well, it is not unusual to have a little bit water in the tailgate or the doors, that's why there is drainholes in the bottom of the tailgate and all the doors, but you are not supposed to hear water swishing around.

The water in the doors/tailgate is mostly condensation water, or should be.

If you are concerned about rust later, make the complain in writing, and have the dealer confirm, in writing, that you have complained about the water in the tailgate. This way you can allways show that you complained before the warranty ran out.

I've had mine 4 years and never had water in this.

Mine is outside all the time getting all the rain.

ps when is your next service?
If it is due soonish then I would suggest you ask the to check it out under warranty at the service.  If not, then they should accommodate an investigation.

Thanks again Asterix and Eye30.  My next service is not until March but it is going in again next week for a knocking noise at the rear so I will mention it to them yet again. I will also make the complaint in writing and after the festive period will also contact Hyundai UK to seek a satisfactory resolution. I know within my heart it just should not be happening.

Merry Christmas to you all.
