I agree - an unsightly blot on the landscape and an unnecessary temptation for drivers to take their eyes off the road.

I disagree, our main road South has a notorious death rate. Beautiful scenery etc, but deadly. We have plastic roadside markers at the site of accidents with a cross, red for injury and white for death. Sometimes whole families are represented. They bend easily on impact and although unobtrusive, provide a significant reminder of the ever present danger on our roads.

However, stone or fixed monuments are a real danger to motorists and should be removed.

The councils around my gaff have canvassed the locals recently, not about whether to allow roadside tributes but for how long to allow them to remain.

I don't like seeing them around here, to be honest, as it's a constant reminder of just how many accidents occur in these parts. I've had my back fence replaced 4 times in 12 years due to serious hits (I back onto a main road) though thankfully none of my "domestic" incidents have resulted in a fatality. Yet.

A few years ago my council put up big yelow signs detailing the number of accidents on a particular road.

However, as some roads are long, in miles, it does not say where the accident happened.

Rusty and I are poles apart on this one  :disapp:

I think a few flowers or a ribbon as a tribute to a lost loved one is not doing any harm. Even before I recently lost one of my Brothers I could understand people doing that.

As Phil says they are also a visual reminder of a black spot and the need to drive carefully.

Let sleeping dogs lie I reckon

Our markers are placed at the scene of the accident.  :(

I'm in favour of them.
But there needs to be some guidelines - which I seem to remember are in place in certain areas.
Certainly there's a highway in NZ somewhere on the North Island which has them all along it. At each end is an official sign explaining why they are there and to please not add to the (from memory back in about 1996-100 plus fatalities).

They should be simple, clean and not solid as someone said.

A white cross with a wreath and name is enough.

Seems we're talking about 2 different things here....It's the "memorials" that get on my goat.

Having a simple indicator will get the point across that someone has died on that particular stretch of road just fine....  :undecided:

There is no need for crosses and memorials on the sides of roads, we have cemeteries for those sorts of things....

Mostly down here, there are just a few flowers and maybe a ribbon.  I don't think there has to be a cross and stuff.. But I still think a small tribute is ok and should be allowed to remain.  :undecided:

On my recent trip to Tassie I couldn't help but notice these signs: http://www.transport.tas.gov.au/safety/roadside_crash_markers

I reckon these are more than adequate...  :goodjob:

These are the type of signs/Markers I seen in SA last time we where over there,I had to ask what they were for,as we didn't see any signs as this article shown.

I have no issue with a simple cross or marker, some of the larger tributes are a bit over the top,I pass one on a regular basis, this tribute is eight feet by six feet and extremely distracting.

I also regular travel a strip of road which has numerous simple white crosses,as a reminder to the rest of us this stretch of road is very dangerous, this particular road also(by government authorities)huge signs at either end and in the middle warning drivers to travel WITH their HEADLIGHTS ON,day and night, this is how hard it is to see vehicles in many spots on this road, the amount of PPL who take absolutely no notice of this signage is incredible,I have also seen some of these same PPL come to grief on this road, for the simple reason they could not be seen.Dave may Know it Neaves Rd,terrible road,OK for me when I'm on it I am normally three feet higher than most.

I know that road.
I have no problem with a small cross and a few flowers etc.
But not stone monuments.
I see the crosses as a gentle reminder to all motorists plus it probably helps the family deal with the tragedy too.
