Some "hackers" (for want of a better word) do good for the online community.  Like this young fellow appears to have done.

Others want only your details so that your bank account is wiped clean.  This has happened to at least two people I know, that were at sea at the time.  All of their money from their accounts was gone.  Thankfully the banks saw that it was fraudulent, and restored their money that was in their accounts.

You have to watch those Navy people though. 
Whenever someone has tried to defraud me by saying they'll buy something big I have advertised (like a car on eBay), they usually say they are away at sea but can pay me via Western Union.
