I was wondering as anyone else had this minor niggle.

Sometimes when I go under a bridge  the auto lights come on and when I exit sometimes it takes ages for them to go off say about 5 to 10 minutes and yet other times they go off in a matter of seconds, even when its a bright sunny day, wonder if the sensor is on its way out?

That sounds naff. Other than trying mine out when new I never used the feature on my FD and don't with my GD.

If you do a lot of bridge driving (:snigger:) mention it at the next service or drop by and have a quick word.

My Hybrid was more sensitive in that area than my current car. Often the sensitivity can be adjusted, so you might want to check your book and see if it can be on the i30.

It definitely sounds like a faulty sensor, not normal at all.

I am not sure how the GD models measure the sunlight level but I would guess you also have the little black dome on your dashboard that houses the sensor?

Try covering it with your hand to see if it activates and deactivates the headlights when set to Auto mode?

The point is that the cut out timing appears to be quite erratic, not whether it functions or not. IMO it should always cut out at a preset time if working properly.

What I was getting at was that the sensor seems to 'forget' to turn off again, keeping the lights on longer than usual. My English fails me sometimes and I don't always know how to get my message across

OP, have you tried disconnecting the battery for half an hour or so? It could be that the ECU needs a good old fashioned reset :goodjob2:

Nope not disconnected the battery yet, but it always seems to come on ok, might give it a go at disconnecting the battery.

All lighting functions are routed through (and controlled by) the Body Control Module (BCM). I can't recall a battery disconnect resetting the BCM, but it's worth a try :)
