Just discovered that I have 3 broken turn-light LEDs in my left side mirror.

Does anyone know how to "open" the mirror and get access to these LEDs?

The car is a 2011 with folding mirrors (not auto).

Hi Steinrk,

Incidentally I broke my left hand side LED's as well a while ago and I have attempted to get them repaired. By the looks of things you will need to take the mirror 'glass' off and strip the housing from there.

Best of luck!

When you say broken - is there physical damage to the unit? Or have the lights simply stopped working?

While the How-To I did was for auto-folding but hopefully it will be of some use - I can't see them being radically different just because of, or lack of rather, the actuator for folding...

Hello ibrokeit

Your "How-To:" was exactly what I was looking for but didn't find  :goodjob2:

On my indicator three of the LEDs are not working anymore - which I find a bit disturbing since the lifetime of a LED in principle should be longer than the life time of the car...

I had hoped that it would be possible to replace only the LEDs, but from what I see on your picture the indicator itself is a sealed unit that is not possible to open  :undecided:

Looks like I have to start a eBay search...

On the How-To - not a problem, I know how that goes.

Interesting on three not working anymore - in theory yes they should.  Having said that environmental factors could play a part, not saying it is... just a thought/guess - such as the LED encapsulation/lens itself being well below freezing and rapidly warming when indicator gets used - could fatigue the plastic until is compromised... then the LED junction stops working because of that.  Could also have been a bad batch of LEDs or bad solder joints.

I think you are right on it being sealed type unit - I am sure I still have the old one, but it isn't 'jumping out' at me so can't confirm.

It looks like the ebay links at the start of the how-to are still good - and the part is an OEM part.  Though maybe the Czech plant warning might apply to you.

Those LED's ought to be connected in series, no? If there was a bad solder joint then all of them should be dead, as what happened with mine (I had to solder two wires together after the circuit board they were attached to - the two LED's that point 'backwards' broke).

Quite an interesting predicament you have there, steinrk.

PS: Nice write-up, Gareth! I'm going to definitely have to come back to this thread when I finally replace my mirror LED cluster :goodjob:

No they would never be wired in series... always parallel to the 5v supply rail.

That's strange because my whole mirror wasn't flashing until I bridged the negative and positive wires on the PCB that housed the furthest two LED's on my 2011 FD. I soldered them together and bypassed the last PCB holding the furthest two LED's and it worked.

Found the one I replaced (I had broken the lens on it - allowing moisture ingress... mostly condensation - however the LEDs are still working perfectly... so kept it for junk).

Yup - sealed - the lens appears to be heat sealed (though it could be a bonding adhesive I suppose)... so opening it would probably be problematic.  You might be able to get it to split/break along the seam but you could also end up cracking across the lens and then you would have to bond it back together some how.
