Hi All
Could someone explain how the fitted deicer works in the windscreen. Where does the heat come from?
I had a Ford Focus with a heated screen and you could see the elements in the glass but I can not see anything on the i30.
I have been using it in this cold weather it works ok but takes a while to heat up. I have been using it in conjuction with the windscreen heater.

If you have a premium model it just heats the blades when they are in the parked position I believe. The other specs don't get it at all. I believe it was ditched on all uk models a few months ago, but not sure.

Yes Lorian is right. Your premium model has two strips of heating electrodes in the glass on each side, below the eyeline, just where the blades park.

My owners manual quotes this feature as "windscreen deicer" but later issues correctly describe it as "wiper deicer"

Does it work?

Or do you still have to scrap/cover/defrost screen

It warms the screen for about an inch underneath the blades very well, as discovered in the past 3 weeks. You still have to scrape the rest of the screen, or as I do, set the front demist (but turn off the A/C which comes on with it)

So what's the point of it?
Seems like a good selling point but no practical use when you actually need it.

Well, it frees up the wipers as the demist doesn't hit that low down on the windscreen

Thank you for your reply.
My  premium i30 was registered July 08.
The screen does not seem to clear any quicker but in this weather the screen has been really iced up. Probably ok for mild frost.
I do not like using the aerosol de-icers good old scraping works better.
On the subject of iced windows. The other morning saw a car that only had a small round hole cleared in windscreen on drivers side only and the same on side windows rear not cleared at all. Some drivers have no idea how dangerous it is and I believe if caught a fine of £1000 I think. Also ashamed to say it was a lady driver.

Sorry cant keep up with your replies.
No it does not seem to make much difference no wonder they dropped it.
You cannot beat a proper heated screen as I had in the Focus. Would be worth the extra price if you had these conditions all the time.
We are lucky here (in the south uk)  the winters are not usually too bad.

It does work, I can guarantee it. I used it a few times over the festive period to free the wipers which by testing them, showed they were previously glued to the glass.

No they don't affect any other part of the windscreen and I don't know why the feature was dropped.

My yet-to-come-i30cw will have windscreen/wiper deicer, it will keep the wiper blades free of ice whilst driving.

I you can't park under a roof, the best way to avoid screen scraping is to have the interior heated. Mine will have electric heater (DEFA) - it will keep the glasses clear, interiors dry and make the cockpit warm and cozy...

Hi Saunaman I think you will need all that up there.

If it is only for the blades then thats ok. The salesperson made it sound as if it deiced the screen.

I have to say that in any previous cars I have owned the worst thing has been the wipers freezing after scraping which has then left a frozen smear over the windscreen after commencing driving which as altered visibility after starting off.  The heated blades prevent this and as I have said before Hyundai would have a difficult time persuading me that I am getting as good a car as I currently own when I go to change  what with the we don't need heated blades, oh yeah you only get a half leather interior in the "top" model now etc etc etc....

I believe I am a true advocate of the value for money argument but gee,............... Hyundai sometimes make that difficult for themselves

I seem to be having more problems with the INSIDE frosting up.

When I put the screen blower/heater on, when it melts I need to get internal wippers fitted

Do not order your extra pair of wipers just yet, I've got something that you could try before...

Inside frosting is quite common problem here and that's because you have moisture/moist air inside. In addition to avoiding bringing the moisture in (snow, wet clothes), keep the A/C on as much as you can. A/C will re-circulate some of the air inside and dry it up (that's why A/C is always switched on along front demist, Shambles...).

I keep my A/C always on, no matter what the ambient temperatures are. Modern A/C systems do not have cell-freezing issues, so it is safe to have it on even in winter. A/C coolant is not circulated in sub-zero temperatures, but the system is kept running to ensure proper lubrication. A friend of mine (a car engineer) told that most common problems introduced to the car A/C systems are result of people not using A/C regularly.

When it gets cold (below -20, that is), any of the auto A/C:s that I have had, have not been able to keep the glasses clear. Then I need to switch to semi-automatic and check the blowing directions and speed manually.

Have you checked under the spare tyre for water?

I've owned two cars that have frozen badly on the imside of the windscreen and both times it was wet in the boot.

My apologies, did not want to be offensive. I was just referring to your earlier post:

I do not understand the point in switching off the A/C, perhaps you could provide some more info on that. To my understanding, demist function is most effective with A/C on.

Yep demist is more effective with A/C on, but I can't see the reason for having A/C on when the problem is outside. I see "mist" as the stuff that forms on the interior and yes, the A/C clears that quite quickly which would sort out eye30's problem I guess :)

No water in spare wheel well.

The issue seems to stem from the screen air vents.

If I remember I make sure the screen vents are off/closed and are in the footwell position.

This does reduce the condensation on the screen.

Really heavy frost & ice last night.
Blade de-icer worked brilliantly could see where the line came it also moved up the screen and the ice came of in one big block. Minimum scraping probably the right  sort of ice this time. Inside and outside clear in approx 3 mins took longer to do the lamp clusters. Take back what I said earlier in previous post.

Its not fair, as you know mine i30 Premium didn't have wiper deicer because its made in the Czech Republic. I know its not like the Focus windscreen de mist, in this cold winter, any thing to help safe driving is welcome. Thats why I am not too happy from the reply from Hyundai uk-that this item was taken off as the winter in the UK is not cold enough! Thank god I got a garage!
