Auto side mirror fold relay help on i30 SE Nav 2016

Hi,

First time post, I'm not very familiar on forums. Hoping I could get some help.

I have a 2016 i30 SE NAV (Right hand drive).

I have power folding mirrors with the press of a button on the inside drivers door.

I bought a relay module kit to make the side mirrors fold/unfold automatically.

I only went ahead with this project after doing extensive research and satisfied it would fit/work.

I used Vini's instructions on this website:

Cutting to the chase, installing the module. The mirrors open up via ACC ON which is good - as expected.

I need to hook up the relay's mirror close wire onto the remote central lock wire in the door panel. This is so when i press lock on the remote key, the signal should relay to the module and close the mirrors.

This is the bit I'm having issues with.

All the instructions on the internet say the orange wire in the door is the lock signal and blue is the unlock signal.

First of all I can't even see a blue cable (but i don't need the unlock wire as I am happy with ACC ON unfold).

I tried all the colours in the photo attached and I did get close whereby the mirrors did close when I pressed lock on the remote key.
However, the issue is the indoor cabin doors lock/unlock button also triggers the mirrors the fold - this is not ideal. This leads me to believe that the door lock which occurs at 10mph may also trigger the mirrors to fold.

I need to find the wire in the door which is solely for the remote central lock signal and nothing else so that only the keys remote central lock will cause the mirrors to fold.

Anyone have any idea? or have come across this issue before?

Hi,

I already attempted to temporarily connect the relay's mirror close wire to the wires in the 2nd photo - you might be able to see a little bit of outer plastic unsheathed on them all.

I'm starting to doubt if there is a wire that just carries the remote lock signal in the car

Another idea I've thought of is...

When you press the remote lock button on the key, the side mirrors orange light stays solid for 1 second.

Likewise, when you press unlock on the key, the side mirrors flash twice.

I'm thinking, somehow find whatever is linking the remote signal lock to the side mirrors flashing and hook the mirror close to that.

Trouble is, I have no idea. I'm not exactly good with these kind of things.

I installed it as well but it's been a year now. If I am not mistaken, the lock signal cable is the gray one. This diagram is for a window controller but it mentions lock/ unlock wires as well.

When you press your indoor 'lock' button, the one located in the cabin... Does it affect your mirrors to close? Or is it only closing only via the remote key lock?

The cabin lock button folds the mirrors as well! It's annoying but unavoidable!

That is very annoying! That won't work for me, especially with auto lock at 10mph.

There must be something which gives off a signal when the car is remotely locked - anyone have an insight of this?

When the car auto locks above 10 mph my mirrors don't fold. On the unit I have there was a wire which had to be connected on the accessory loom so it knows whether the car is running or not!

It's not the mirrors that differentiate the action but the central locking system. One or 2 flasher are programmed by a software so you won't be able to do that unfortunately!

From what I know german cars have everything linked together so you can program the car with a special software but Hyundai seems to build cars in a different way. Maybe if you ask your dealer if they can install the OEM auto fold relay that some i30s have.

This is most likely something controlled through a software update if all possible wires have been explored.

Do the required closing and opening signals need to sustain voltage to action completion or is a pulse enough? Does mirror motor action self terminate or risk grinding when a pulse is too long?

If it were me, I'd try resolving the logic I want and then feed the appropriate wires to deliver the right combination of inputs through switching relays to provide a 1 second pulse if that will create a safe behaviour.

I've done similar work to inhibit DRL function during turn indication.

So designing your pulse won't be necessary. That's one step resolved. I'd pursue how the 1-second flash happens and tap into that. In my case with Firty, all turn indicator wiring is slaved off the blinker relay (which I swapped out with an eBay electronic version to avoid blinker race when working the new LED DRL/indicators) so I had to design a delay timing relay circuit to inhibit the DRL portion for the right effect. In your case the 1-second flash isn't coming through the blinker relay, so it will be a matter of tracing the wiring back and using the same pulse that illuminates rather than the lock signal you have, as the closing trigger. But that's just what I would do.

Re-reading through the thread, you seem to be quite close to what you need. Aftermarket kits are not a guaranteed match so we can see you're needing to take stock of how your kit is behaving and patch in a final fix. Whatever isolated behaviour matches your desired outcome is where the connection needs to occur. I'm visualising that the pulse driving the indicators on lock is just the right pulse, assuming the mirrors already know when they are open or closed i.e. remote locking twice won't open your mirrors again. Even if that's the case, I still think some connection to that is your quickest fix.

My mirrors work fine hahahah! I was just trying to explain how the aftermarket relay works but your method sounds a little bit complicated for a guy that has not much knowledge about car electrics. I don't know what electrics knowledge the person started this post has so we better wait for his reply!

The relay I bought is not folding/unfolding the mirrors when auto lock is activated.  Auto lock is a safety feature though. Personally I wouldn't prioritize folding mirrors over safety!

Exactly! I can tell you various examples about women placing their handbags on the passenger seat and while waiting on the traffic lights, thieves open the door, steal the handbag and run away! It's not only thieves tho! Children can accidentally open the doors while the car is moving as well.

Sorry for the delay.

The FB post was by my friend, I gave him the same information to try find an answer.  I don't have a FB.

My electrical knowledge - not good. But I can follow instructions well if I'm just briefed.

I realise this is quite a lot for me, but I do strive to achieve the results.

Another thought I've had is there's a small red light and the front of the dashboard (security light) which turns on when you remote lock. Another possible source to tap into to hook up to mirror close relay wire?

I'd prefer the hazard lamp flash (turn indicator) wire to the dashboard indicator just because the former will more easily provide the current to energise the relay. The latter might not if it's just enough to drive an LED.... but I'm just guessing without measurements.
