May need a compression test. If it just turns over and over, well worth checking for fuel delivery/pressure too.

On the dashboard, does the icon showing a car+key stay lit (solid) when cranking? If so, the key hasn't been validated; if it turns off while cranking the immobiliser is disarmed.

Also, does the tacho lift off zero when cranking?

Let us know.

Hi Shambles,

The icon with a car + key doesn't come on at all.    Yes the Tacho lifts off zero when cranking.   It is a warm day in Sydney 24 Deg C,  The glowplugs icon goes off after 2 seconds then I crank the engine.

Hi Cry-3,

I may have to get a Hyundai dealer for compression test also for fuel pressure.    The car seems to run perfectly once I get it started with a jump starter on the (new) battery.

That sounds very odd that it has a new battery but it needs a jumper on it.

Hi Shambles and Cry-30

I took a video of the dashboard when I cranked the car yesterday  and also today.     Today when I cranked the car the engine + key icon came on and the tacho didn't lift off the zero!
I went back to yesterdays video of the crank and noticed the engine + key icon flashed for an instant when I started to turn the key, but went out immediately and the tacho lifted off the zero.
So the ignition key system must be faulty.   Also on this occasion the car wouldn't start even though I had boosted the 12.15 v on the battery by a couple of volts with the jump starter
I have not experienced this before and it suggests a fault as you say Shambles with the ignition key system.    This could also be why I have problems even with a new battery, Cry-30

I shall have to learn how to replace the ignition keyed switch - maybe get a working one from an i30 wrecker.

Thanks Shambles and Cry-30 I very much appreciate your help.    I am pretty old and retired but I have changed the fuel filter, the oil strainer, and glowplugs and battery so far.    Any further advice or suggestions would be most appreciated

I'm having the same issue with my 2012 1.4L.

Replaced the glow plugs but I'm still having the same problem. Today I measured the resistance on the bus bar and found it to be 10.17k ohms (bar disconnected from the car) measuring from the connector to the bar. I think it's too high for just a piece of metal and wire.

Do you guys happen to know the resistance value for it?

Edit: I've also measured the voltage when turning to key. From the battery negative to the connector that comes from the fuse box I get the 12v. Measuring to the bar (connected to the glow plugs) results in 0v.

Hi Wpcom        I don't know the resistance value for the busbar.   I am beginning to think I should get the workshop manual for my 2009 i30 diesel.    It would be good to know what the fuel pressure is at the engine.  I am beginning to think my problem is in the initial fuel supply because once running I have no problems.    I did think the engine + key icon may have had something to do with it, but this icon only comes on after a lot of trying to start the engine.

Just an update. I got a new bus bar from Hyundai and installed yesterday. As I suspected, resistance was supposed to be close to zero as it's just a metal bar and a piece of wire. Measured the voltage after replacing the part and got the 12v on the glow plugs.

Today the car started perfectly, temperature around 5°C. I was having issues starting even with 10°C outside.

I am having a similar issue with my 2009 1,6 (posted a thread about it, but no answers yet...) and just wonder if you could tell me where this bus bar is located? And do you have a picture of it (presuming they are similar on different model years?)...?

It's the bar that connects the power from the relay/fuse box to the glow plugs. On the GD model the p/n is 36720-2A800. Not sure if it's the same code for the 2009 model. If you have the VIN you can check partsouq.com searching for glow bar.
