Hi, so we have an issue - our i30 hatch battery keeps dying so the car won't start. It's always when my wife (sometimes I'm there) is out doing dog sports. It's normal to keep the dogs in the car, windows down in winter, and sit with them or take them in and out through the day when it is their turn.
This model is keyless start. It's dying a lot. Sometimes twice in a day, one time I jumped it at lunch and drove it more than 45 minutes and it was dead again at 7pm. The dealer ran some diagnostics and said it looks fine (no parasitic drain after a 45 minute power off wait). It's never when she goes to work, just the dog sports.
A friend with a Toyota had a similar issue. She was keeping the tailgate/hatch open which means the car never "sleeps". So they said flip the latch manually. That kind of works for us too (the dash goes off, otherwise it won't when it's open). But that's not enough it's still dying sometimes.
Is there a quick guide for what will keep the car awake and asleep? The dealer suggested we have to lock it (even if we are sitting in it), and I saw some information that some cars will be in an alert state if they detect keys nearby which would be basically all day for us in that situation. Is there a good way around this? We now carry a battery jump pack which is a lifesaver but this really shouldn't be happening. It's less than 2 years old. Do I need to wrap the keys in foil?
