  • He loves nature in spite of what it did to him..
Gday, new here, obviously,  signed up to help with a decision to make shortly,  i currently own a Subaru Forester GT, and will be purchasing a new car in a few months,  as the Forester is perfect in what i need, except its milage and big turbo fuel bills, i need a similar machine, and so far the I30 CW seams to fit the bill, Diesel of course.  but i have a short list of 3 cars, VW Golf diesel, Holden Cruz, or the I30.    im not a fan of Euro built cars in OZ conditions, and the just because Aussie's will pay it, prestige premium pricing with servicing,  Holden cruz,   hmm dunno yet,  so basically i have joined to do as much research as i can into the I30 and the ownership issues, problems likes etc etc.   so sell away!   sadly no dealer will let me take one on a decent test drive if im not looking to buy immediately, but i want to test one for at lest a day to see if i can live with it, loading skis/snowboards, camping in, will carry my 2 mtr long tent, and 16 ft long kayak.  not to mention driving ergonomics, comfort on long runs in excess of 8 hrs, as well as sitting in sydney traffic.
other things would habe to be handling, i love the forester for its WRX base, and it shows, not to mention straight line performance and effortless overtaking that can see you easily hitting 200 passing just 3 cars.  now i know any diesel wont get that kind of performance, but i still like to go around corners as fast as i can on a windy country road.  and have the confidence to overtake rapidly at hwy speeds as i dont like spending any more time on the wrong side of the road than i have to.

is is too much to ask all this from one car?

welcome aboard ultralights.  we have a couple of members that have put surf boards and kayaks on their i30s without a problem. i own a hatch and a cw that are both petrol models but have overtaken cars without a problem what so ever.  :goodjob: the diesel i30 would have an even stronger overtaking ability than my petrol models have.  I'm going the diesel next time.   :i30:

Welcome Ultralights  :goodjob:

We had an SLX Diesel Hatch for 28 months and have had a 2.0 petrol SX CW as our 2nd car for about 5 months . To get the Manual Diesel you would have to go the Base SX model in the CW but they Dress up very nicely and you don't slum it too much (But get the cruise pack - with Cruise and Fog lights for just $400 more)

The 1.6 Diesel would have to be the most responsive 1.6 diesel available with great overtaking and climbing performance. It won't feel like a rocket ship to you but does to most who are used to sub 2.0 litre cars.

Looks like they have just released the 6 Speed manual box in Australia with a very slightly uprated 1.6 motor.. I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

Edit: The i30 isn't going to have the road holding of a Forrester GT (AWD) but feels very stable and sure footed compared to most cars in its class  :goodjob:

Not mentioned the pricing, frankly based on the space & power(torque) I needed, I was considering subaru forester, ford escape and i30cw crdi. I got i30cw crdi 1 year ago eventually.
My consideration process was...
golf, performance great, trunk not large enough.
forester 2.0, performance great, space good, fuel economy not too good.
escape 2.3, equipments old fashion, space good, fuel economy not too good.
i30cw crdi, best balance among every point of view.  :goodjob:

gday, just returned from a day test driving and looking over my shortlist,  the Mazda 3, Mazda 6, focus hatch or Mondeo wagon and holden cruz,  cruze was out immediatly as it only is a sedan, and the diesle is a large premium over the base price, same goes for ford.  so that leaves the Mazda 6 and 3,  the 6, again, for my buget would be a second hand ex flet car of demo,  so that left the 3 and the i30.  comparing the 2 side by side, there is no denying the i30 is fantastic value for money.  even in the back of the wagons, the i30 just has so much space, especially under the floor, near the spare, and in the side pockets of the cargo area, not to mention a 12 volt power outlet,  the mazda?  nothing but a space saver spare and cheap compressed cardboard. not even sound deadening uder there, and a space saver spare.  not one storage pocket.   seating wise,  the mazda is more comfortable, but the i30 is a bit more firmer and the controls fall more readily to hand. and the interior and dash design is simpler than the mazda. but thats a good thing.  the i30 claims better fuel consumption, but the mazda has more HP and torque giving slightly better performance at the expense of consumption.  but the fact that a CW CDRI I30 with cruise control and safety pack comes in at the same price as the mazda 3 with no options..   quite simply there is nothing that comes near it for value for money..    i am still to take both cars for a decent day long test run.  this ill do in the coming weeks.

Find some long long hills in the i30 crdi and you'll be sold...... :goodjob:

Hello and welcome.

Since you said holden cruze is out. Whats the price difference between Golf and i30? I ask coz here in Europe difference is significant. And despite that Golf is a great car it is not THAT great. CW has much room, i think i30 is cheap even in Aust, diesel has nice torque that will make any overtaking not a problem + great economy on long open roads, some members have easily 1000km+ range.

Really think that cars you mentioned will hardly beat i30 CW in things you look for in the cars.

All test driving done, and the decisions made,  im sure its no surprise to you lot,   but now the decision,   White or Black,   SLX Hatch or SL CW????     sadly the dealer wont give a reasonable trade in, so i cant buy until my Forester is sold.   otherwise i would have one ordered this afternoon...

hmmm White or black?      and yes, i have been through the Korean club pics,   still cant decide...

I would go the White SX CW if it were me  :goodjob: White shows off the i30's lines better than the black and the CW has a slightly more pleasing back half than the Hatch. And it doesn't take much to dress up the SX (But make sure you get the $400 cruise pack)

There is a comparison thread on here somewhere between the Hatch and the CW  :winker:

Good work!!!

My i30CW eats the highway miles I do, sits on 120 @ 2550rpm, which is not working too hard. Oh and as I found out this morning when the wife wanted to charge her phone, the boot the cigatette lighter in the boot does not need the key in to provide power.

Welcome, I just did the same thing with my my01 auto gt forester. 15lt per 100km was a joke!
Also servicing and boxer engine timing belts etc.

I got a sx crdi hatch and it fits 3 baby booster seats across the back seat. Some thing the sf5 could not do. Also even in hatch, the interior is more spacious and roomier than the sf5. I measured the hip and shoulder room as well as leg room!
The cw woul be bigger with the room compared to sf5 wagon, the hatch is deeper and wider except at top of the roof/hatch line where it slopes down.

Fuel economy and servicing/parts way cheaper if something did go wrong than Subaru.

If I get 600km per tank city driving, I'm still way ahead than 300 in the Foz as premium is similar price difference as diesel to normal unleaded.
Also 11 year old car vs new or couple years old- I made my choice and don't regret it.

Welcome- if you follow through or not.

Decision is made, the very faithful and reliable Forester is on the market.  Colour is chosen, as soon as the Foz sells, ill place the order....   SLX Hatch, Hyper silver. CRDI Manual.   now i have one question, it seams the CRDI manuals are now a 6 speed.  great news,  but will the new model have a particulate filter?    i hope not..

Good choice. I am really pleased with my hyper silver hatch. Even my wife who is not a fan of silver likes it.
