Hey Guys, I've been checking your forum before but I decided to register and start my own thread. Our car is a 2.0L vivid blue with all the options, I bought it back in Feb 2010 for my wife.
She rotated the tires at 6.000 miles but she forgot the 12.000 miles rotation... in actuality the car has 19.500 miles and we went to dealer for oil change and tire rotation. I visually checked the tires from time to time and they looked good in general so no big concerns but when the dealer inspected it...surprise!! Front tires almost gone due to very localized wear out on the inner shoulder (13.000miles on front). We couldn't believe it...they didn't carry the same tire size so I ordered on my own, just like in kind. Initially, I thought it was a camber problem and then I found all this discussions about the same problem.
I returned to the dealer with the tires to be installed and alignment checked. I found the 2010 alignment specs and ask them to provide me copy of their findings, they used the fancy Hunter GSP9700 and camber values were within specs, however they report me the Total Toe was off -0.45 deg (left -0.35 + right-0.10), spec calls for -0.20 deg to +0.20 total. They also reset the steering angle sensor to zero (not completely sure what that means). Road force balancing done with 0 lbs net pull.
They gave us the global sermon about how careful we need to drive the car, to watch out with holes... in few words they blame on us....additionally remaind us that alignment warranty is valid just 1 year/12.000 miles. I contacted Hyundai US warranty claims and there is a possibility of getting a reimbursement, at least for the labor, but based on all the similar problems with UK, Aussie specs, hatch, Cws, diesel and petrol, this seems to be a wider problem so I'm planning to make my claim loud. Does anybody here have obtained any formal answer from Hyundai (not dealers) on your particular countries?, technical bulletin or similar...any warranty service feedback? has anybody tried with the car safety or highways institutes as a safety issue? Please let me know, all comments welcome..Thanks

Welcome Luiggi, Can you tell us your vehicle type & your country. Hope we can answer your questions.  :)
The thread topic tells us it is an i30 US Spec CW.
Given hi sspelling of "tires" and the distances in miles, I'm guessing USA. And he also says he's been in touch with US Hyundai warranty claims.

But perhaps the cars are sold further south into Central America, so maybe I'm assuming too much.

Luiggi, almost all our issues on the forum have related to diesel engined vehicles, giving rise to the concern that the "heavier" engine is a contributing factor.
You may nave determined from your reading that I have some experience in the tyre industry, although now semi-retired. Firstly, pay no attention to the "steering angle sensor reset", as that just relates to the electronic power steering and will be about getting the steering wheel centered after adjusting the alignment.
I would not have thought the figures you've given us would hve caused as much wear as you are talking about. Don't suppose at this late stage you have any pics of the tyres in their worn condition?
I'm surprised there is ANY warranty on alignment. There are too many variables which can affect a car's wheel alignment in service.
Do you have the camber figures? And rear readings?

Thanks Guys..very good vibes on this forum. I spent sometime trying to compress the pictures so I can share them.
Yes, I'm living in Los Angeles, CA since 2007 but we are really from Venezuela, South America...so please excuse my different English!!! I saw you guys use Tyres instead...Back there, we used to have Hyundai cars too, 2001 Elantra 2.0L, Accent 1.5L and another 2005 Elantra 1.6L....no major issues ever...lots of kilometers of reliable fun!! (I'm Ok with both units now) In all cases tires lasted way longer even with no so good roads like US... Over here, we have another Hyundai too, a Sonata 2007 3.3L V6 which required tires change after 55.000 Miles (above 80.000 Kms) of course those were Michelins (expensive ones, $200 each), Falkens were my choice and at this point those have 20.000 miles with little wear out signs....so very disappointed with the I30/touring performance!!! Please look at the tire detail, it was cracking open already!! ....again only bad number was the Total Toe by that much!! suspicious

Thanks for the pics, Luiggi.
Now THAT'S the sort of shoulder wear I'd be concerned about. I'll be interested to hear from others who'd had shoulder wear if it was anything like as bad as that.
I've noticed a bit of this in the last year or two on European cars.
A couple of Golfs.
An Astra.
More - but I can't recall the make.
In the cases where we checked the alignment, nothing was out enough to, IMHO, cause this level of wear.
Except one, where the tyre pressures were about 15 to 18 psi and fairly severe toe out. We advised the driver to keep her pressures up and call in for a visual inspection in a few thousand klms. The replacements were wearing OK last I saw.
So, toe out plus low pressure seemed to be allowing the tyres to "distort" outwards form the rim, placing a lot of load on the inside shoulders.
But the other cases didn't have low pressures - although they could have had during their life.
I'm not suggesting everyone who suffers this issue is running low pressures. Just that in one instance that appeared to be the cause.

Please keep the info coming.
But whatever, it doesn't seem to be restricted to i30s, nor to diesels. One of the Golfs may have been a diesel but the Astra wasn't.
