Good Morning Folks

I seem to be having a run of bad luck with my i30 at present its an 08 plate with 82K on the clock - commute 80miles per day, and a few months ago I started getting a strange growling type noise coming from the front nearside corner of the car. This noise increased and decreased in pitch with the speed of the vehicle and was not audible until above 40mph. I eventually took it to my local garage for a service hoping they would see the cause, and on paying the bill found that the rear brake caliper had seized on so job done. The noise remained and I took the mechanic out a couple of days later and he heard the noise for himself. Back into the garage it went and he checked bearings, steering units and even the gearbox but could find nothing obvious and charged me nothing for the privilege. Last week I have now started getting a creaking sound like and old door at low speeds when turning corners. It disappeared the following day but has since returned. On Google this symptom was shown as power steering fluid needs topped up, but my i30 has electronic power steering. I think my query is does anyone know what this could be? and could it be linked to the growling / rumble noise from the front nearside. As soon as my car went over the 60,000 miles and things have started going wrong, Hyundai use the "wear & tear" get out on the warranty. I have lost confidence in this car, and am thinking of trading in for the i35x so don't want to spend loads of cash on it unless for safety reasons.

That is an odd one Pete! Nothing obvious comes to mind. Hopefully others have some ideas

The only thing I've ever heard of is the CV joints, but i think that's a bit early yet for those k's. Your mechanic would have spotted this too.

I actually thought wheel bearings until you said they had already been checked

I mentioned this in another thread. A few years back I had a strange growling noise coming from the front of the car. It sounded "mechanical" like a wheel bearing failing. To cut a long story short - it was eventually found to be a tyre problem. The centre tread on both front tyres had started to come away from the carcass. The noise was the loose tread rubbing internally on the carcass as the wheel rotated. It was not easy to spot but could well be worth you investigating.

That's potentially very serious, so definitely worth checking, good one Alan.

That age of i30 also had a TSB to replace parts inside the steering wheel (which usually manifested itself as a knocking sound in the wheel itself), it may be that the ultimate manifestation of that TSB not being performed makes this creaking at low speeds??

Thanks to all who replied. The creaking sound maybe dry bushes, according to my local mechanic but the wheel noise was in fact coming from a tyre problem. The tyre was wearing unevenly at the front nearside and was described as a "stepping" hence the rumble / growling noise on increase and decrease speed. Apparantly all the other tyres were wearing unevenly so the tyre depot told me there was something wrong with my suspension.

I have loved driving this car as its very fast through the gears, but as bits keep falling off it on a regular basis now I have called it a day and now traded it in.

My son recently informed us that his wife was having twins to supplement the grandson we have already so we needed something that would take three child seats. Looked over the i35 and sante fe a good few times, but eventually we got a good deal on a Suziki Grand Vitara, 1.9. There weren't many i35's that had 4wd and those that were available were out of our price range. We live in the sticks in Scotland and although the 30 coped with the bad weather last year I am looking for the comfort of a 4x4 in case we have the kids with us during the rough weather. I use to own a Tucson and was very happy with that but traded it in for the i30 - wish I had kept it now!!
