Samoa and Tokelau have skipped a day - and jumped westwards across the international dateline - to align with trade partners.

As the clock struck midnight (10:00 GMT Friday) as 29 December ended, Samoa and Tokelau fast-forwarded to 31 December, missing out on 30 December entirely.

Samoa announced the decision in May in a bid to improve ties with major trade partners Australia and New Zealand.
Neighbouring Tokelau decided to follow suit in October.

I'm guessing they would represent about .1% of our trade...

But for Samoa, Australia and New Zealand are it's major trading partners. BTW, one of the major (if not the major) sources of income in Samoa is family sending money home!

Fantastic country with beautiful people. Very friendly and welcoming.

I wonder if you had booked a holiday would you be charged for the "lost" day?

Also, if your birthday was the 30th:
- do you miss out on presents and
- are you a year younger than you should be?

I did hear that hotel guests, etc. weren't required to pay for the missing day.  The workers however, were required to be paid for the day that didn't exist.

We'd better not let the Aussie Unions know about that one, they'll want to advance a day too!!  :whistler:
