Hi all, just wanting to get advice. My i30 has developed a curious habit. When starting the car with the radio on, when I turn the key to crank the engine, there is a loud boom from the radio, as it either dims or comes back on.

This is much louder than the radio is set at and enough to startle and I'm wondering about the  long term effect on the speakers.

Anyone experiencing this as well. Should it be something that is looked into at service time?

That shouldn't happen at all. The speakers are electrically driven and you are right to be concerned for their longevity. To create a loud noise like that, they are receiving a significant pulse of energy, and I'd be concerned at what wattage, (power), they're receiving too.  As it is abnormal, so might the amount of power be too. It needs checking PDQ. Is your system standard or do you have amps / woofers fitted.  :'(

OK, I meant any after market devices, so the dealer should be able to sort it out for you.

Sorry Steve but I am fairly sure only the SR has an additional Amp + 6 stacker...

The SLX just has the same audio as the SX + 2 x tweeters...

Outcome of check at the dealership.

They have said they need to order a new radio.

Funnily enough I started my car twice on the way home and both times, no boom.

Don't you love it when you complain and when they test it, it misbehaves just like you say it did. Great result  :goodjob2: :goodjob:  :happydance:

Rarely the way, glad its sorted.

This 'Boom' you refer to, ive installed a few subwoofers/amps for friends, and usually when installed via the OEM headunit you get a slight 'Boom' nothing overly loud , but enough to draw your attention.

Usually, i think, its to do with the amp turning on/and off, and sending power back to the standard speakers, could be wrong, just an observation i've had

Always the case, fix one problem create the next.

The radio was replaced, I suspect now with an older refurbished unit.

This had fixed the booming and the crackling and distortion on AM, but now I no longer have outside temperature display.

The reason I think it's an older refurbished unit is because the card with the code on it seems to have serial no 1101..... (? Jan 11) whilst the original was 1104..... around the time my car was made.

Of course I rang them immediately. They think it may be fixable with a firmware update but I have my doubts having read a thread here about some of the early 2011 models not having outside temp display.

Aargh.....

Radio and temperature display now all fixed with software update.

I wonder then if this does raise up the possibility of the poor people who got an i30 somehow without outside temperature display in late 2010 or early 2011 might be able to get this functionality with only a firmware update on the radio.
