I have a barrow to push and wish to ask for your help please.

Years ago, when I was in the W.A. Police I was the OIC of the WA Police Community Support Branch, which encompassed four separate "units" including the Domestic Violence Unit and the Ethnic Affairs Unit.
One of our ongoing issues here in Western Australia was that of FGM, or Female Genital Mutilation, which is practised in many countries around the world and unfortunately, still by lots of people here who hail from various countries around the world.

Female circumcision is performed on young girls, usually by an older male elder and typically with an unsterilised knife and with no anaesthetic administered.

It is old news and I haven't been involved with anything to do with it for years.

However, there is currently a lady called Toni Fitzgerald who is in Africa and trying to eradicate this procedure and she came upon the idea of bribery, as China initially did with its "One Child Policy" whereby it offered a radio to families who agreed not to have more than one child.

Toni's proposal is to buy one goat for each family who forever agree to spare their young girls having to go through this. One goat for one girl spared.

$25 buys one goat, $50 buys one goat and food for months, etc.
The programme is underway and it is working.

It's all explained here:
http://www.rightsofgirls.com/index.html

I have two daughters and two small grand daughters and would hate to think that they would have to go through it, but unfortunately many, many girls do.

Thank you.
Dave

Can't see why we shouldn't put this up on the portal page for a while, as we did with our Kawasaki sponsorship drive :)

It's a great cause and very worthwhile imho.

Dave, if you don't mind, I'll just edit your opening post a little, in preparation...

Would you mind contacting them to make sure they're happy for us to sponsor their cause in this way (free, of course) ?

I have sent a request via email but as yet haven't received a reply.
However, as she operates from Africa I'm not sure how often she will get access to emails.
I am sure she won't mind though because she has been interviewed on radio to raise awareness and seek new sponsorships.

Good work Dave :goodjob:

If you've heard nothing by weekend we can go ahead and raise a portal banner for them - I'm sure they won't mind us replicating their images :D

Thanks for that.
I've had another look at the website and I can't see any mention of a facebook page.
I don't do facebook myself but I would have thought they would have one but it appears not.

This is the email I received back for buying a goat & feed. I still haven't heard back about the permission, but from reading this there wouldn't be an issue.

Thank you for making a difference and buying a goat and saving one little girl
One Goat Saves One Beautiful Young Girl from Genital Mutilation and a Life of Pain

Hello David
Your gift of a goat is saving one very young little girl in Africa from horrendous physical mutilation and a life of pain.
It is not easy for us here in our comfortable lives in Australia to understand what this means … and the incredible difference to a beautiful young girl and her family you have just made.
It is truly hard for us to believe that parents can do this to their own daughters, subjecting them to cruel agony, and then ongoing pain and infection…all so that they can get a good ‘bride price’ when she marries. That price is normally a farm animal.
Thank you for understanding the power of what we can do to help, a simple gesture as cooking in one night instead of ordering pizza, changes a little girl's life...forever.
Because instead you can buy a goat that is going to a family who agree not to ‘cut’ their precious little daughter.
May I be so bold as to ask three things of you?
    - Please tell people about this awful crime, we need to raise awareness to begin the task of stamping it out.
    - Please think of buying a goat on behalf of a friend when next you are giving someone a gift.
    - And please, can you pass this email on to your friends who live in this lucky country, in the hope that they also see how important this is and will want to change the life of one little girl by buying one goat.
Thank you, and blessings
Toni Fitzgerald

$25 can buy you a bottle of vodka, a bunch of flowers, half a ticket to a concert or a pizza meal-deal
OR
it can buy one goat and the right for one young girl to her own body and a proud future.
Please forward this email to a friend, together we can change lives... ...one goat, one girl at a time.
Helping stop mutilation in Africa

This year three million very young girls will suffer lifetime damage through ‘cutting’ - shockingly painful removal of parts of their genitals. A new organisation has been launched in Australia to help save young African girls from this dreadful fate.

“The Rights of Girls Initiative Ltd" was started after I returned from volunteering at schools and medical clinics in Africa earlier this year. Like most people I had heard about female genital circumcision but had no idea what was really involved. When staying in a village, I first heard the screams of a frightened little girl being held down while parts of her genitals were cut away with a knife, without any anesthesia.

In Africa it is estimated that 86 per cent of young girls will be ‘cut’. Why? So that when they marry, their family can be paid a bride price…generally a farm animal. Having paid, the new husband has the right to cut open his bride on their wedding day so they can have sex.

Now I have. :)  All good to go.

Dear Dave

THANK YOU

I  have been overwhelmed since news of our acitivy broke this week.   And now, I know why....your support has been amazing.  thank you so much

I have begun to email you a number of times...and something keeps getting in the way..this time,  I will definitely get to the point of pressing 'send'  :)

Thank you for your special understanding of this horrible issue, and thank you for your support by posting our information on your 130ownersclub forum...wow...wow

I have been reading the comments there and yes, it would be amazing if people reposted and did what they could to help.
I think every woman, every mother, every daughter, everyone who has a sister, girlfriend or wife may be interested to know about this crime, and possibly help, so little of our money can make such a huge difference to a beautiful little girl and her family.

About the facebook page...it is coming...soon..there is just so much to do...an so many little girls to save, and I know the support of yourself and your club members, we will indeed make a difference.

Thank you, and may god bless you and your family and your friends.

Toni

Good to read, Dave :goodjob:

I noticed they've now got a membership on our forum. Brilliant. When I fully wake up we can push the details up to the portal page :)

I am posting here for no other reason than to bring this to attention again and ask that if you did intend to buy a goat or two but for whatever reason haven't got around to it, if you could please do it now it would be appreciated.  :goodjob2:

I know that the link on the home page is only there for a limited time and it would be great if we could make a big difference during the time that it is there.

I don't know if any of you looked through the different links on the website www.rightsofgirls.com but there is a video on there that I found difficult to watch, but worth the effort, if you know what I mean.

 :thanx: for your support.
