2008 FD 1.6 petrol. For a few weeks now I've become increasingly aware of a moaning wheel bearing (I think). Next weekend if its warmer and dry, I'll investigate. Has anyone replaced a front or rear wheel bearing yet? Front ones don't even look tapered, rears seem to be built into the hub unit. Any thoughts or experience guys?

Not too pricey, not OEM but carry a 12 month warranty.

£50 and £177 front $ back respectively for genuine Hyundai examples from SG Petch  here in the UK.

Plus Vat and delivery of course, the Carpaets4less price is inclusive of avat with free UK delivery....

A low frequency rumbling sound can also be caused by a tyre - when the tread de-laminates from the carcass. It is not easy to spot until the tread is so loose that it is possible to feel it when you press it with your finger. Over the years I have had it happen twice.  On both occasions the sound was prominent but it was difficult to determine which wheel was guilty.

Try fitting your spare to each corner of the car to see whether the sound goes away.

Is your car out of 5 year warranty?  If it still has warranty I would try the dealer (although there may be an exclusion on miles).
Sounds like bad luck for a wheel bearing to fail.  As I recall, some are noisy, some aren't when they fail.  Noise often alters when steering left or right.  Maybe best "felt" by jacking up & spinning the wheel like MOT testers do.
Beware though - I had a wheel bearing fail yonks ago (on a 18 month old MkII Escort so that was a few years back) - that was dramatic with the bearing seizing, and turning around the bearing carrier that eventually bonded to the stub axle.
So potentially the longer you leave this, the worse it will get.

Good points well presented guys Thanks a lot.

Alan I'm totally anal about my tyres... I check them thoroughly every weekend for pressure, cuts & other damage even though I have a fully functional TPS system, and I get the wheels off every month to nip the stones from the treads, so I'm 99% sure theres no de-lamination, but good call.

Talking Hoarse (sounds like an American Indian Chiefs name lol) I get that completely. My car ran out of Warranty this month & Hyundai aren't too keen to do anything even just out, I discovered that just recently when I suggested they might like to help me out with this possible wheel bearing issue. I could take it into a Dealer to be checked out, I'd have to pay for that, then they would judge whether I got the work done under Warranty, but I dont trust the local dealer.
To be fair I have not used a Dealer for Service work (well I did once but they were rubbish) so I dont expect any "Good will" gesture. So, this weekend, I will get her in the air and do a few checks I've seen on the 'Web & make a decision from there.

Find a deserted road where you can drive 60-80 km/h.

Turn off radio  :snigger: and turn a Little left, then right, you know, like changing lanes...

When you turn left, there will be more weight on the right side of the car, and vice versa.

That way you can decide wether the bearing is faulty left or right side of the car, as the faulty bearing will make more noise when more weight is added on the bearing.

By now, you should be able to determine if it's front or rear bearing, depending of the sound from front or rear when driving.

If not, then Jack up the car and try spinning the Wheel and listen for noise.

Good luck with the job.. :D
