I've only had the car a short while, but here's my somewhat extensive review. I'll be adding to it over time.

You've gone to a lot of trouble with that report.  :goodjob2:
Nicely presented with great photos - looks very professional.
Just a query, have you driven a diesel?
It would seem to overcome your comments about the lack of punch.
I've been driving mine again today (any opportunity) around town and returned home with a fuel average of 5.0 l/100 kms and it's very punchy with plenty of torque for the engine size.

I haven't driven a GD diesel. Do they sound like tractors after 100,00kms?

No, not at all.
My FD had done 136,000 kms when I sold it and it still drove and sounded like it did when new.

Have to agree with db08.  Still have our 2008 FD CRDi which has done 158 000 km.  It drives and sounds like it did when it was new.  The engine has been faultless.

Some diesels in 4WD sound like tractors, I must admit.  Toyotas are among the worst.  The Hyundai diesels I have had (4 so far) are very quiet by comparison.  Because you don't have to rev the s#*t out of them to get the torque you need, they can seem quieter in the cabin than petrol equivalents.

Good to hear. I've noticed quite a few diesel cars around that sound a bit rattly. Maybe they just haven't been looked after.

The servicing cost of the diesel is 30% more, and the initial purchase price is more, but I guess you make that back in fuel economy if you're driving a fair bit?

In any case, the 85L/100km I'm getting from the petrol is much better than the 14L/100km I was getting in the WRX (plus the i30 is on 91 RON, whereas the WRX was tuned for 98 RON... quite a price difference when filling up!)

Decimal points are important.  :snigger:

All diesel engines sound like tractors at idle, why wouldn't they, it's the same method of ignition. This includes models like Jaguar, Merc, BMW etc. What is different, is how well the sound is insulated. It's not a fault of the engine, it's the way the fuel is burnt inside and the engine components themselves.

However, once you get past 1500 rpm, in our cars, you can't tell it's a Diesel by sound, just by the increased torque.

HAHAHA damn I can't edit that post anymore either :(

I know all diesels sound like that. But even in the cabin of a new BMW 330d the sound annoys me! Agree on the torque though. And fuel economy is impressive. A good friend of mine has the aforementioned 330d and can get 1,000kms from a tank.

With my last big high way run i did, Sydney to Wagga and return, driving  sensibly most of the time i got to 905km before the fuel light came on and then drove about another 15km before filling her up and from memory i still only put about 39.5L in... considering brimmed she holds 42 i think, dont quote me on that....

This was from my FD CRDI

Nice :)

I'm yet to do any highway driving in my petrol GD. Will be interesting to see what the economy is like.

Most diesel owners on this forum get 1000kms from a tank without even trying...  :D
Some even get up to 1300kms.... :whistler:

1300 you say?  Might set that as my challenge for the Victoria trip, will bypass Melbourne though and keep heading south.
Interesting thing will be what the tunning box does. Might run with it in on way down, and take it out on way back.
