Well now the weather is a little less chilly here I gave the i30 a good wash & polish. Noticed rust where the paint has chipped off. Bit disappointing as even the Fiat didnt rust after stone chips... the primer coat was very tough! Not so with the i30, so I've ordered some touch up paint & I'll be getting to work on keeping the car looking good by treating the rust first with some rust killing agent then touching up the scars... still it is 3 years old... daughters Swift has rust on the wheel arch returns & thats a 2010 model!

I recomend this product for primary rust treatment before painting. you need very little. When opened it only keeps for about 12 months. never put the brush back in the bottle, always pour a little out to use.

It polymerises the rust. if there is such a word.

I'm not the seller!

Had to do quite a few spots on my bonnet & a couple on the head of the roof last year. Also used a rust converter which acted as primer; then I cocked up all the fixes by using too much black paint.

Got a few on mine as well, about four or so on the bonnet and the standard tree branch chunk on the nearside rear door.

Primer went on, on Saturday but it rained all day on Sunday so I did not finish the touch up, I guess that means it will be done next saturday.

I'm using the standard Halfrauds kit - so far no rust to deal with, just chips down to metal.

Don't forget when paint chips make sure the paint is warmed (on a radiator maybe) before to make sure it flows well and use a tiny brush or toothpick to apply. The brushes supplied are usually cr*p.

I purchased a pack of small brushes from one of our local stores.  Also as my car is lacquered as most are, I found it easier to mix the paint and lacquer together (50-50), only took one application then, rather than two

After reading all the posts and the problems with using the small applicator, do you like that word instead of brush , I think I'll just leave mine and go the black speckled look

I have stone chips & have never touched them up, had car three years no rust. think you should blame the council or who ever puts salt on your roads. ( i'm only guessing you get salt on your roads ) only time i've seen salt on roads was in USA.

yeah, it's the salt that does it.

That, plus the rubble thrown off the trucks on our motorways . Tempted to snip & post a short extract from my drive home tonight (I record all my journeys) to show what I mean, though it might not show up too clearly as the pebbles were bouncing around Fergie until I managed to overtake

These two lorries both shed small pebbles from around their wheel areas; as you can see I couldn't wait to get past them. The noise as they hit Fergie was so annoying. Stone chips usually result  :scared:

Unfortunately, as stated above, the debris doesn't appear on the vid, but believe me it's there :'(

And this is every day

Thanks for the Vid Steve..  :goodjob:

We have a similar problem down here at the moment with loose blue metal (the very hard little rocks about 1cm/half and inch in diameter they use to seal the roads in most of OZ) on a lot of roads which are being refurbished after damage due to the heavy rain which has hit the Eastern seaboard of Australia... :-\

I'm wondering if it will help that you repaint all the areas that have stonechips....normally front of car.......and then once that is done, place some 3M paint protection skin over the front of the car.......that will solve the stone chip issue and scratches and you wont notice it is on there

Funny you should say that.. We have just bought some Altrex Body Skinz to use on Trish's CW (Mainly for the top of the rear bumper and the leading edge of the rear guard / door jamb (Bonnet would be a bit trickier I reckon...)

Got it for A$45 at Autobarn

I bought some of that to put on the bumper ledge so that we wouldn't scratched the paint when loading the boot so to speak. The people at 3M or their represenstatives use one piece to cover the whole bumper or bonnet or in fact any panel and then mould it to the car

yer stuff that, i avoid the highways where possible and stick to back roads where there is less traffic/rocks on the road from mud carters...

although the maxima is copping a flogging, it does a 400km round trip to the girlfriends every 2 weeks... she lives "out west" so its poor quality pot-holed and spray seal roads... not good for the bumper, fenders and bonnet :(

A few years ago I had to follow a gritter for some 5 miles.

The lorry hogged the middle lane of 3 and as the spray was so hard I couldn't get past.

I had to hang back doing 40'ish so I wouldn't get splattered.

Did consider running off and on at an exit hoping to get on in front but as always there is never one when you want it.

The other day we were on one of our newly repaired roads with lots of loose "metal" clanging under the guards..(temporary 60km speed limit) I saw someone ignoring the speed limit and coming up fairly quickly behind us so I moved over in their way.. :winker: They got the message and pulled back (I didn't want our car showered with loose stones)

I find the most irritating thing these days, is the lazy sods in the country who dump a heap of hot mix into a pothole and let cars and trucks flatten it. Your car and wheels gets covered. Took hours to clean it off after a trip to Queensland

your video - have same issue here in queensland. being an industrial area i am constantly passing/behind/overtaking double b trucks usually used in excavation and filled with dirt and rocks etc. they're supposed to be covered but rarely are. and if any have been in pretty bad areas then clumps of dirt is under their wheel arches to. last week we had part of the road actually covered by the dirt, i guess a load had partly fallen out or something, and i was stuck behind a truck and i got smothered by a dust cloud and stones. i was in the overtaking lane at the time with someone on my backside and i had to fall back. very annoying.
