We’re one step closer to a self-driving car as Google reveals it has been testing autonomous vehicles on the streets.
Chris Urmson, director of the technology giant's driverless car project wrote in a blog post that its test vehicles are becoming far more adept at city driving.
Google announced its self-driving car project in 2010, since when the company has been continually testing and developing the vehicles, logging over 700,000 miles and most recently focusing on street driving near its headquarters in Mountain View, California.
The cars can already comfortably handle motorways, but city driving presents an obstacle course of pedestrians, cyclists and blind corners.
To navigate and avoid crashes, Google's fleet of retrofitted Lexus SUVs relies on sensors such as lasers and radar. A driver is ready to take over if needed.
