Right from when I was a young nipper – I have always had a fascination with gadgets, engineering and mechanisms.
 
To date I have taken a sewing machine for granted, but I was helping my wife with some sewing yesterday and to relieve the boredom my mind wandered to the question “how does a domestic sewing machine form the stitch”

You see the needle carry the thread under the machine table and you know there is thread on the bobbin that lies underneath – but how do they interact.
So I asked Mr Google and after a few  minutes browsing I came up with the answer.

So – you know now too……

So basically it twists the threads together - and they don't unravel because of textile interference.   BTW the graphic looks a bit old and frayed :rofl:

Always good to cotton on to something... might have to see how an over-locker (Serger for Americans) does it then.
