I was quoted $200 for filter and oil change on my 2011 diesel model from a dealer service dept. 
That seems a bit high to me. I've never owned a diesel model before so am wondering what the usual cost is. It has 54000 on the clock and had the last service maybe 12 months ago. The oil looks dirty to me.
Any tips?

The oil will always appear dirty as the EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve allows soot to enter the oil. All Diesel's are the same and it is not normally a problem.

That is way too dear so find another source or do it yourself, depending on your abilities. Ensure the oil is full synthetic at all times and type B4. The grades used by members range for 0 to 40. I use 5 - 40  in our Diesel's. The oils can be rather expensive being full synthetic.

Like Phil said, don't worry too much about the oil looking dirty, that's quite normal.
Even after having it serviced it will soon look dirty so no need to stress... 

By rights your next service should be due at 60,000k which will be a major service requiring a change of fuel filter (and other stuff) as well.
Many of us supply our own oil (from places such as Supercheap Auto) and filters (from ebay) to cut the cost.

Here in uk, from memory the oil is c3.

Aussie diesel i30's don't have a particulate filter so C3 oil is a no no, Lester...

drummingman1@ if you have a Blackwoods store nearby you can grab 5ltr's of Shell Ultra 5W-40 for $44, Ultra's fine for petrol or diesel vehicles.

If the service was done 12 months ago it will need a proper service for warranty. Don't just change the oil/filter.

As mentioned 60k is a major service and requires the diesel filter to be replaced as well.

Cheers for the info. Much appreciated. I only just got the car so I was a bit curious as I'm doing a lot of klm's over this holiday period.  It actually runs out of the 5 year warranty this month. So I hope nothing major goes wrong with it this month or after.
