I was more interested in the common items which failed detailed in the table at the end of the article rather than the places.

===================%%================

Some 53.3% of cars in Dundee failed their last MOT test

West Country towns also had surprisingly low pass rates of 50%

Tyres, headlights and indicators easy-fix issues leading to MOT failures

Some checkers might be more diligent than others... The checkers might be real slackers on the Isle of Man ... :undecided:

Do they charge extra for a second look, or are lazy people just using the first inspection as a guide as to what to fix.

If I was paying a mechanic for an inspection and he failed me for a blown indicator or headlight globe rather than fixing it, we would be having words,

I spoke to my mechanic about roadworthy checks.  They aren't permitted to fix anything, it is supposed to be presented to them in a roadworthy state (you are supposed to check the easy items before you give it to them).  The good ones will fix it for you and let you know, but don't get angry at them for doing their job.

My mechanic and RWC bloke are one and the same.

He should (and would) fix anything before doing the roadworthy.

I would assume that most people cursed with an annual roadworthy would take the car to the same person who services it, so would expect them to do a pre check before doing the job, now if that precheck happens to be done at the same time as the RWC thats all fine and dandy.

If you just show up as some random and have never seen the mechanic before, thats different, but still, 5 minutes to replace a globe vs the time wasted doing a second inspection (for which they can't charge) seems to me to be more mucking around (for both parties) than a 50 cent globe is worth.

The ones I've been to will do a free re-test within 10 working days.

I know some people who believe the MOT is the same as a service. In their minds, that's the only time they need to consider replacing blown lights and bald tyres. They're the ones who see me doing weekly checks and assume that because the bonnet is open, the car has broken down. :rolleyes:

I can't see how you could not know that you had a headlight out. Especally the drivers side.

The others are a bit more tricky, but even without someone help hit the brake pedal for checks, can be checked with a bus/truck behind you at the lights.

The number of cars I see with only the rear windscreen brake light working are scary.
