I see Dazz, you clearly haven't seen designated cycle routes on the Sceptered Isle.

Allow me to explain, they consist of a painted area at the roads edge for the most part into which car, bus and lorry drivers trespass willy nilly.

We have some like that, but also (in some places) quite a few stand alone Bitumen and/or Concrete bike/walking paths. I do understand your point though! Definitely needs a pole with a flag or bright light on it (to improve visibility for other motorists)
