I have a friend who is not familiar with WWW and doesn't really pay attention to his car. So, I'll have to do the "dirty" job for him (which is -I admit- a real pleasure on this forum)

Car is a 2007 Comfort 1.4 Korean made whose warranty has expired.

Report from the test drive:
There is a really bad "clunk-clunk" from somewhere in front of the driver and a corresponding feedback to the steering wheel, when driving on uneven road, bumps or holes. My friend claims that the problem was there all the time, just got far worse now.
There is no problem other than that, car behaves very well.

Dealer said it is the steering column that needs urgently replacement (cost: ~1.800 €). He didn't specified the exact cause.

I know there is a TSB for the "MDPS WORM SHAFT FLEXIBLE COUPLING REPLACEMENT" and many on this forum have replaced the steering column (including myself but for different reason I guess, besides I was not in the affected range).

Questions:

1. From experience, are these symptoms the same as the case of the above TSB? (Shamples posted an audio file in the past, but I can't find it  )

2. If yes and given that warranty has expired, does he have to pay for the job?

Thanks for reading and replying :whistler:

I would expect your friend to find it difficult to get it repaired free of charge outside the warranty period.

There might be a (slim) chance of getting a contribution to the cost if it could be proved that the fault was there at the last Hyundai dealer service, when the car was under warranty, and that it was a known fault the dealer should have spotted

It's a difficult situation and sorry to hear about it.

The TSB is a declaration of some known fault which should be repaired for free anytime the problem occurs. Or not? :undecided:

A very logical argument in my opinion. However, with car dealers. who knows?
Definitely worth pursuing.

Hmm I would say it's more of a repair procedure for dealerships to be advised of - nothing related to warranty or otherwise.

Sounds just like it, if you pardon the pun. Can't see an out-of-warranty freebie fix coming his way, even if his VIN is in the affected range.

If it's out of warranty, then it probably has a deal of kms on it. It's probably wear & tear IMO.  :(

My understanding is that unless it is a recall by either the company or the government motoring body then the cost of repairs out of warranty is the owners
  • 1.4 Petrol Active I'm no expert, so please correct me if

You kept that part secret  :D

However, warranty would only be possible if the known faulty part was proven to be the problem, but that means ubdertaking the repair.  :undecided:

Update:
Problem identified... oh yes, the usual suspect
After a little pursuing, dealer proposed a fix for 450€ (from 1800)

He'll have to make sure though, not to leave the dealer's garage with MY faulty steering column on HIS car
