Generally very happy with quietness of the i30 .. it is a lot quieter than the Lancer for example ..(our Tiida is probably the class leader in this area though)

Road noise can be a bit of an issue on the highway at 110 kms on some of our recently re-finished highways (done with a coarse bitumen)

Has anyone investigated or added any extra sound-proofing to reduce road noise?

Dynamat claims to have decent sound insulation qualities, and my mates and I all use it to line part of doors when we install aftermarket speakers. It's some kind of tar based product which prevents greater reverberation etc.

Where does the noise come from?
Front wheel arch, rear wheel arch, hatch area, bonnet/engine comparment?

On my car there is sound proofing attached to the bonnet.  Do you have this?

Engine noise very very very low.  Sometimes when stationery I think the car has stalled.

  • 1.4 Petrol Active I'm no expert, so please correct me if

There is just a general increase in noise levels (enough to drown out the radio)

Yes we have the under bonnet soundproofing.. and I agree the engine noise is low when cruising...

If I gave the i30 a really thorough clean underneath and then applied more black sound-deadening under the guards..

(a) would it de-value the car..?
(b) would it help with this issue?

Save your effort and just put the volume on the radio up higher

When we sound deaden our cars for audio equipment, we take off all the door trim, and line the inside of the car "shell" with the sound deadening stuff. That way, you can't actually see it, though you may break a few trim clips in the process, as many of us have found out the hard way :P The trim stays on fine, no problem!

You'll notice that if you line your driver's door, for example, and tap it with your fingers, that the whole door sounds dense, and it kind of makes more of a "thud".  I had a 3 door Getz, and lined ALL the rear panels with sound deadening, and the bass response was awesome, and the ride was substantially quieter.

Dazz we only see Cold mix road surfacing out west. in this state we have hot mix on most major roads now. i think it is a safty issue, as cold mix does not have good traction. also it is very hard on tyres so they wear faster, it is also more resistant to rolling so use more fuel. that means it's also bad for enviroment ( write to your local member ). it also throws up loose stones causing paint daage and windscreen damage. they save money useing that but everyone else pays more in long run.
proof coating like Duckman sugests would help sound deadenig but would add weight too.

No problems. It's quite a task adding more soundproofing to your car. I'd advise against it unless you were genuinely unhappy with the sound in the car, but hey, each to their own

True, the tar based stuff weighs about 5kg for a good lot of it, but in the end, it's only adding 5kg or thereabouts to the overall weight of the car.

I drive 1.6 petrol and engine noise after 120km/h is pretty high. The car would be perfect with a sixth gear to lower the rpm at high speed. I was looking for soundproofing solutions and found this:

Unfortunately, there is no feedback about it. For now, I think I will drive a bit slower on the highway or turn up the volume :)

If it's road noise specifically that's the problem rather than wind noise or engine noise, I'd say the most convinient and sensible place to start would be to look at getting a set of quiet tyres.

I believe it is not road noise, but engine noise. While driving with that speed I go to neutral shift and the noise is much much lower. I think it is mostly due to using a timing chain not a belt.
