Hey guys I'm getting my new i30 slx crdi tomorrow and I've been checking out the forums and there has been much discussion about tuning boxes and chips.
I've got some questions about it and it would be great if you guys can give me some advice and help.

1. Whats the difference between a tuning box and a chip? (or is there no difference?? lol)
2. Can it be installed anytime or only after the car has travelled a decent amount of kilometers?
3. Since my car will be under manufacturers warranty, will the installing of a chip or tuning box be traceable by the service people?
4. Will it decrease the time it takes from 0-100km?
5. Is it illegal in Sydney Australia?

Thanks for the help guys I really appreciate it and look forward to reading what you guys have to say :)

Hi M8.. I think I've said welcome before  :winker:

I haven't used a tuning box or chiped any of my vehicles but this is how I understand it (others will be able to give you more specific advice)

1. Whats the difference between a tuning box and a chip? (or is there no difference?? lol)
A tuning box is an add on module (which can easily be removed) while a chip is basically a re-map of the ECU (electronic control unit)

If you google there is lots of info like this..
See Below....

2. Can it be installed anytime or only after the car has travelled a decent amount of kilometers?
There are varying opinions on here about that (personally I would wait for a couple of thousand Kilometres..

3. Since my car will be under manufacturers warranty, will the installing of a chip or tuning box be traceable by the service people?
This is an advantage of the removeable tuning box in my opinion (and why I would consider a box rather than a chip)

4. Will it decrease the time it takes from 0-100km?

Yes, some have reported an improvement of around 1 sec 0-60kms depending on the choice of box or chip

5. Is it illegal in Sydney Australia? I doubt it...

Thanks for the help guys I really appreciate it and look forward to reading what you guys have to say :)

Welcome m8, i think tuning box & chip one & the same.
I'm not sure if they are illegal in NSW. unless your car starts to blow black smoke for 14secons contiuous or longer then you can get finned if you get caught. I've never used the tuning box but others have said they don't blow any more smoke than stock.
i'm happy with how my CRDi performs as it is stock as a rock.
but good luck if you get tuning box.

The difference between a tuning box and a Chip is,
1. a tuning box changes how your car performs.
2. and a chip is a vegetable you fry & eat with fish (or eggs).
i hope this clarifies it for you :D
