Hi all, I was wondering if anyone out there tows a small van with their I30.   I currently have a camper trailer (750 kgs) which it tows quite easily but am considering an A'Van Sportliner.   The weight shouldn't be a problem, I'm just a little concerned about the I30's maximum ball weight (75 kgs), does anyone out there tow a Sportliner who can offer advice.   I bought my I30 diesel new in 2008 and I am extremely happy, particularly with fuel consumption and torque.   I'll be buying a new car sometime next year and it'll definately be another I30.

Welcome.. Great to hear you are really pleased with your i30 .. I think Ouri30 might have towed a similar van to that but can't find any reference in a search   Bob hasn't been on for a year or so...

Hi, you might think ball weight of 75kg is not that much but at the ball you don't see that many trailers that put that type of weight on the ball. like 75KG would be about an average size persons weight so just lift the front of the trailer up and see if it feels as heavy as lifting a person up. but i hope the trailer has brakes too.

Lakes is right about the ball weight.
Is the A Van a single or dual axle setup?
Dual axle will minimize the weight transfer in dips and during braking, which would help.

  • My other car has no roof :O Mk1 MX5 1.8
Recently towed a double axle car transporter, with a car on the back, approximately 30 miles. Car was a mk2 fiesta, not sure about weight, and have also had an mx-5 mk1 on the back. My diesel coped 100% in regards to the comfort, not too much bouncing about etc.
Power wise it managed mine, but then again mine has been mapped to give a bit of extra grunt, so mite be a tad unfair to say you can tow it with ease..
Tho before had towed a Jet-ski on the back with no problems at all, rather larger 3 seater Seadoo.

Hope this helps.

Hi Lakes,   yep I lifted the front of the van by the coupling,  at a guess I'd say around 80-90 kgs.   I own a Cub camper with a coupling weight of 80 kg and the Avan was far in excess of that, that's why I asked if anyone has towed the Sportliner.

The Avan Sportliner has a tow ball weight of approximately 60kg, so you're laughing..... :goodjob:

The recommended hitch load when  towing a caravan is 7% of the MPTLM or the maximum permitted if lower.

With a  caravan weighing between 1070 kg and  the maximum tow limit of 1400kg  the  maximum permitted   hitchload 75kg should be the target.
