Microsoft has celebrated the imminent demise of version 6 of its Internet Explorer browser by baking a cake.

The software giant held the light-hearted celebration as it revealed that the program was used by less than 1% of US internet surfers.

It is keen to kill off the old version of the browser and persuade users to move to IE8 or 9.

There's so much version-specific code in our forum to cater for the nuances of IE7, IE8 and IE9. You could ask Dazz, as most of the time he has to enable "compatibility view" to make the forum look decent, but that in itself gives him problems for which he has to occasionally turn it off

Considering IE is the most popular browser, it seem strange that a forum isn't set up to cater for it....

As for Daz and using compatibility view, is that because he's "admin" and see's dead peop..I mean see's stuff that us peasants can't?

Just curious as I've never had to use it myself.....

The main reason is that IE has never properly conformed to w3c standards in html, css, xml, java, svg, etc... more info on the w3c is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Wide_Web_Consortium
All other browsers have had excellent compatibility with these international standards that Microsoft seems to either not care about or purposely be attempting to subvert.

cant see how IE is so popular, it lagged behind for years in the latest technology, i reckon the majority of users would be school students etc, who have it pre-installed on educational computers, work offices etc, where they have no other option than to use IE, like it or not. That coupled with the lack of knowledge some people share in internet browsers who know no better.

Safari done the same with me several years ago, it was just a less reliable version of Firefox at the time. Then firefox was being a pain, taking ages to load, not allowing me to tab browse, so Chrome was installed

I'm on IE8.

It works and does what I want it to do.

Ok I get the odd issues but so do most browsers, don't they.

It has a solid user-base in those with disabilities from what I understood a while back.  I know they'd love to get more main stream market share, but it's not like they're struggling - just not as successful as they probably hope.
