So far quite happy with the i30! Nearly 18,000km on it and only 2 small issues. One is the passenger side visor mirror is popping out, but the main one that concerns me is the steering wheel "leather" is peeling. Started off in one spot really small, but now covers almost 1/3 of the wheel, and its only taken a month or so to get there!

The car is a 2011 i30 Trophy... hoping they will replace the wheel under warranty. Might see if I can get the sound system remote installed at the same time.

Anyone else had experience with the wheel trim coming off?

Hi Rob

A few occurrences of this have been reported. Check out our search box and enter the words "steering wheel peeling" (without the quote marks) ;)

yeah will get both issues sorted. Its due for a service too, but the dealer is $85 more expensive than the mechanic next door!

Dropped it off this morning, they have told me they will replace the wheel without even looking at it, so thats a good sign.

I asked if I could have the steering wheel upgraded to include the audio controls, and advised that I was happy to pay the difference (providing its not too expensive!) and got told it wouldnt be possible as the steering wheel with controls isnt compatible with my car as I have the one without controls.

Ummm... what?

I spoke to the bloke and said that members here have actually fitted the controls themselves, and he then told me it might be possible and would call me.

Not a big deal either way... but... dealer / servicing spin is always a little strange!

Well, they might be right... The decisive factor is the model of the clock spring that is installed in your car. I can't imagine the cost of putting a new one by the and installing additional wiring for the controls by the dealer.

I did tell them that I wanted them to quote on the loom, clock spring etc so fingers crosses. If not, it's not like it's terribly hard to reach the radio!

Just got a call from the dealers, steering wheel and visor have been replaced  :goodjob2:

The guy I spoke to also said that he was wrong and the upgrade can be done, and was quoting 15 hours of labour to do it

I've seen the guide on the forums... it looks fiddly, but not 15 hours fiddly! Think I'll do it myself :)

Still.. I'm happy with the outcome!

Just re-read the installation guide from agentr31. Printed a copy to show the service guys and see if they will scale down the time "required"

I guess they didn't want to do it really, so they overcharge to stop you proceeding

Ok so all good, just picked up the car

Gotta love this though, they handed me a quote for parts for the radio controls (not including the 15 hours labour)

Wait for it.......

$3112.08!!!

1x clock assembly spring $71.19
1x ext wire $34.60
1x switch assembly $138.45
1x main wiring assembly $2584.92!!

Guess I'll do the mod myself at some point! :)

Maybe they mistook the wiring loom for the one required in a Boeing 747

That is just disgusting. Either they actually don't want to do it or the idiots think the whole dash needs rewiring to do it. Retards. Might be worth taking the part number for the wiring loom in. Also check to see if you actually need a new clock spring.

Just had a phone call from the guys at Hyundai asking if I had it done yet. Told them I havent had the time to look into it further as yet. He quizzed me on the costs I thought might be involved, and then told me he had another customer ask about the installation. He remebered me as I had printed out the how to guide from this site and handed it to him, along with the details of the forum.

He said he would pass the forum info and a copy of the guide to this customer, and sheepishly said the guide was very well done and the site looks like it has great resources!
