Now isn't this just the business:

".... the Hyundai i20 WRC is powered by a 1.6-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine, which develops around 300bhp. Drive is via a six-speed sequential gearbox to all four wheels."

.

Still thinking that the real showcase for the i30 is WTCC & BTCC along with TCC's around the world.

So many people buy success in any brand of product, I mean Adidas etc is bought by kids because its aligned with success in Sport & fashion, Tesco sell similar products less successfully because the product is aligned with low budgets.

If the i30 could be shown on WTCC & BTCC etc successfully beating the usual suspects the brand would be able to start justifying their steadily increasing prices.

I saw the Veloster Turbo recently tested against the equivalent VW Scirocco and Ford Focus.

The Veloster was the most expensive...

Don't believe it Ffoxy sorry.

A quick glance at the 3 websites show the following

Veloster Turbo 1.6 T-GDi, 184BHP £21,770

Scirocco 2.0 Tdi, 170PS, £22,225, GT version £25,450, R-Line version £26,975

Focus 2.0 TDCi, 163PS Zetec S - £21,545 (that's cheaper but has less standard equipment), Titanium X (closer) £23,295.

It may be that there are cheaper options in the Ford and VW range, but both of these are the most comparable in terms of power and even then you are paying more for less.  The cheaper Fords and VW options also have much less standard equipment and don't have a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty.

I agree with the sentiments but this weeks Auto-Express says differentl for the models they chose.
I do suspect an element of Anti-Hyundai in their testing though.

http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/hyundai/veloster/60386/hyundai-veloster-turbo-se

"The Veloster Turbo SE is more powerful than a 158bhp VW Scirocco 1.4 TSI, but £545 more expensive, too. Coupes are also bought for their badge as much as how they drive, so this Hyundai may suffer at the hands of premium brand rivals.."

Typical press rubbish!!

The VW they mention is indeed £21,450 list price so £320 cheaper than the Veloster but...

the VW only has 17" wheels, cost to go to 18" as standard on the Veloster £450
the VW does not have an electric drivers seat, cost £265, standard on the Veloster
the VW does not have a sat/nav system, cost £885, standard on the Veloster.

the £320 cheaper has just become £1279 more expensive. :fum:

Just reading the apparent "fawning" over the offerings from VW & Ford makes me sick.

There is little emphasis on the forward looking of Hyundai but  heavy interest in the apparent better quality materials used in the other 2 makes.

I wouldnt consider either the VW or Ford personally, people who have tried Hyundai & know the brand are far more likely to stay. I know there are exceptions but in the main Hyundai owners are brand loyal.

Problem Hyundai face is that the German marques & Ford seem to be able to maintain the illusion of quality better than Hyundai where poor residuals will still scare off potential Hyundai buyers.

Don't get me wrong, the press are far kinder to brands such as Hyundai and Kia than they once were, but in the same sentence as "excellent build quality, superior reliability, manufacturer leading warranty" they will put "not as good value as they once were".

Yeah, they improved the quality and reliability because you used to berate them for it and the flip side is that those improvements cost money.  I looked at the Focus before I bought the i30 and was distinctly unimpressed, it was OK, but nothing startling.  VW, like all German brands are pretty bland in my opinion, boring but functional is my description of those.

Back on topic :D
Ford have not produced a decent WRC car since the RS1800, the Sierra was popular, but 2WD was always going to struggle against the Celica and Integra, the Focus did not compete with the other marques properly, no more than the current Fiesta is.

VW have never properly dipped into rallying, their best shot being the Grp A Golf which had limited success on national championships around the globe but nothing at WRC level.

The Accent WRC could have been a great car, but the preparation and running was farmed out by Hyundai to a (dare I say it?) "budget" specialist when compared to Prodrive or the factory Mitsubishi's.  They were also against it in that both the Subaru and Mitsubishi road cars were already 4WD, this had to be added to the Accent and so the body was never really made for it in the first place.

The same can be said of the i20 of course, but at least it is a level playing field the DS3, Fiesta and Polo are all 2WD road cars converted to 4WD WRC cars.  It will be interesting to see how the i20 WRC fares against the Polo WRC in next years championship, even then expect teething troubles which VW have had an extra year to sort out, the Polo has been tested on various events during this year, the i20 is completely new.
