Seems a bit pointless when the button is out of view when driving...  :undecided:

I took the button off and i saw that the led was missing.
The button can be illuminated as i tested with the help of my mobile phone.
Next step is to get the led installed.

It's just a standard hobbyist's LED, Phil, only teal/blue rather than common red, 5mm diameter and made to run on 12V.

No lamp in mine either but I suspect it was left out to avoid more howls of protest at the ridiculous location out of sight.

Thanks Gonz, I asked because the instrument led's are actually printed circuit mount like a mobile phone, wasn't sure there would be enough room for the standard type.

Ah, takes me back to my job selling components at Rod Irving Electronics in Melbourne waiting for my career to kick off.

There are smaller 3mm LEDs generally as an option, so some attention to dimensions might be wise before proceeding.

On the right hand side of the page.

I'd suggest it's a little too large for what you want (you'll end up doing corrective laser eye surgery on yourself :scared:)

No,i'll use ILL+ and ILL-.

Do test the potential if you can, before you solder up :)

I know it sounds logical to use ILL- and ILL+, I was just wondering why they'd provide solder points for both ILL- and GND, if they aren't the same, unless it's just a reminder that the LED has polarity and the points are indeed on the same copper track.

That's my guess. If you do decide to jam a discrete LED in there, remember that the flattened edge denotes the cathode (negative). For Surface Mount Device (SMD) types, you may need to check http://lighthouseleds.com/blog/polarity-guide-of-0402-0603-0805-1206-and-most-all-smd-leds.html.

Does the led dim like the rest when you adjust the instrument intensity. That could be what ILL- is for.

That's a great job :goodjob2:

Good to see each LED has its own resistor on the anode leg - you seem to know what you're doing :D

(PS, does it dim with the dashboard rheostat? Mine does)

As you can see the one of two led legs is longer than other.
The longer is the +
PS,with the dashboard rehostat it dims!!
Thank you for your good comments!!
