It's quite average to get first snow in late October, but it can vary few weeks back and forth. Usually the snow will fall and then melt few times before getting permanent cover, but sometimes it may be permanent at first try.

As we say here, there's no such thing as chilly weather, but only inadequate clothing. Just wait for January when we can have up to -30.  Actually I don't like the coldness of winter either, but I do like the winter scenery and Aurora Borealis which we can see occasionally.

Furthermore, northern Canadians or Siberians would say that -30 is far from chilly

Where I live, very cold is about -4 for about 3 hours until the sun rises and the day is clear and the max temp rises to about 15 Deg C. This is usually now, in spring, but winter is wet and around 7 - 12 max and of course Summer is usually 30+, but we can get 10-12 days straight of 42 Deg too. That's when the house is in complete darkness with shutters down fully and air cond on, too hot for me outside.

Compared to my previous Nissan Almera which was a bit restless on slippery roads, this has more relaxed feel but will not outperform German rivals. I need to be careful not to drive too fast because better handling makes the speed feel slower than it is.

Today I went to Joensuu for shopping, and to do some trainspotting at the countryside. Here we are at the end of small forest road, which is originally built for hauling timber out, and it's also used for many recreation purposes. After many weeks of raining and occasional snow and slush, the proper winter is about to settle down. Notice the front grille cover, which reduces air flow into the engine, protecting everything in there from extreme cold, and making the engine to warm up significantly faster. This is quite popular accessory here, especially in newer diesel cars which do not produce too much waste heat for cabin heater. Of course it must be removed for the summer.


There's no LED tail lights in this car, which is only a good thing here, because the waste heat of traditional bulbs keeps tail lights clear of snow and ice. The LED lights would get quickly covered, which can be dangerous in poor visibility. In heavy storm there will be far more snow sticking to the whole rear side.


It started snowing a little while returning to the car. In heavy storm the side you brushed and scraped clean first, will be already clogged after you have cleaned the other side. Especially the windshield must be cleaned good, because the wipers get easily clogged of partially frozen snow. When parking, it's a good idea to lift the wipers up to prevent them freezing into the windshield.

Some pics from yesterday...

Lake Kuorinka refuses to freeze properly. Some smaller lakes and ponds are already frozen enough for ice fishing, but I guess this is more windy place so it will not freeze so easily.


On the road again... Should be very careful if you intend to change the lane because of that snow between them, and there were also some black ice in the asphalt. That car in front of me was driving little slower, and I thought I'm not so in hurry so I didn't pass it in these conditions. The fuel consumption gauge goes a bit high, because the DPF just started regenerating. Of course I had only few more kilometers to go, like in most cases when the regen starts...

Today was a bright and sunny winter day, which usually means cold one as well. It was -17°C outside which is considered here only cold (-30 would be "very cold"). I just got out from work and decided to take this country road for taking some nice winter scenery pics. There's not much snow yet, but lots of light frost which will fall off at next windy day. These are for you mates down under, to have some cooling for your heat wave

Do you have studded tyres on yet?

Yes, I have had them on since late October and will take them out in April. At here it's mandatory to have M+S winter tyres from December to February. Studs are not mandatory, but are allowed from November to a week after Easter, or as long as roads are slippery. About 80% of Finnish motorists use studded winter tyres. Studless tyres are good in clean and snowy roads, but can't beat studded tyres in hard ice.

Wow, thank's for the pic's tohis, I like seeing the blue sky & snow. It's sunny & warm here, been servicing my MC & just went for a ride along the beach road. Wish I could post pic's.
I can't imagine useing studs.
Also a few friends of mine are inland in the mountains fighting fires.

It's around 0°C again and occasional snowing, which means lots of salt and slush in the highways. There's no way you could keep the car nice and clean. 


Grroar! Few times I have seen an oncoming car and thought "whatta heck is that, is it a Peugeot or something", then as it comes closer I see it's an another i30!  Especially with LED DRLs on, it surely sticks out somewhat from all those 10-15 years old VWs and Toyotas on the road.
