Wish this wasn't happening right now, after been made redundant several months ago and not a steady income coming in. Almost at the 130,000km mark and warranty is completely gone... far out I am about to have a nervous break down.

But hey how is everyone doing here in i30 world?

Missed ya  :)

Hey Mrsi30 that's awful luck.
I'm "between jobs" now too, have been since September but looking hard!

Your car might respond to a gearbox oil change, just guessing of course, has it ever been done and is the gearbox oil level correct anyway?

Maybe there is a kind and mechanically savvy i30 Owners Club member nearby who could take a look for you for free?

I actually own the i30 model (baby) that used to belong to our friend AlanHo!

It still has pride of place on my window ledge at home now rather than where it used to live, on my desk at work.

If they had one of a diesel SLX I'd get one for my window ledge... :)

:welcomeback: Sorry to hear that Mrs.i30 .. if it is the valve body that has gone in the gearbox which is the normal auto gearbox issue you maybe able to get some subsidy from Hyundai. It is worth asking.
Find out what is wrong and let them know you are aware the auto in the i30 has had some issues..

If they are unsympathetic hint at "ombudsman" help... If we can help let us know..

I feel sorry for Mrs i30. I hope the auto works out ok.

But on another note, this is what I worry about with the impending disappearance of manual transmissions in Australia.

The fact is the i30 automatic transmissions are having problems and they're not even the new DSG ones prone to problems.

Being a manual driver all my life and keen to remain that way, I don't know why you'd pay $2000 more for an auto and then pay for the extra in fuel consumption, as well as worry about it dying outside of warranty.

Yet with more and more models removing the manual option, there will soon be little choice.

Well, we haven't had manual cars in our house for over 20 years. If you;re a spirited driver or really into towing, then manual is your best choice. Although there have been problems with the autos, the % relative to the number produced is still very small. There have also been a few clutch replacements in manuals too, due to leaking seals allowing oil onto clutch surfaces, so really anything can go wrong with any transmission.

Sometimes there is an inherent design flaw in a component, it appears the valve body mechanism is the culprit in the case of the auto's. I note that once replaced, there are very few complaints about anything else going wrong in that trans, so all in all, a good unit.

We have two 2008 & 2010, never had a hint of trouble from the trans in either car.  :Touch:

We had no choice but to have a CVT in the Hybrid (apparently these are pretty reliable) but went for the excellent manual gearbox in Trish's 5 speed MY11 CW.

I would have possibly bought an i40 if I could have got a Premium with a manual gearbox!

Just thought i'd mention, if you have an auto, its good to have a stand alone trans cooler, most new cars come using the engines radiator to cool the trans but stand alone (for a better word?) does a better job. heat is the killer. also have the trans fluid changed around 30k. like I would expect fitting a non factory trans cooler might void warranty? so in that case always have trans fluid changed at 25k & you should have no trouble. but my m8 Jean has the very first Hyundai accent that is Auto & not one prob she just takes it to the Hyundai dealer she bought it from new when they tell her it's due for service.

Agree 100 % about the cooler Lakes. When the combined radiator/trans cooler eventually fails, you end up with coolant in your trans which is a huge repair. For the price of a cooler, it's excellent insurance IMO. :goodjob2:
