      Caloundra, Queensland.
This was the start of the 1983 Qld round of the Australian Rally Championship.
Among those on show, a Fiat Abarth (LHD), a V8 TR7, a 2L Toyota T18 and others.
These were the top 5 seeds for the event.
The televised stage was in the Mt Coot-tha quarry, only a few minutes from the centre of Brisbane and at the base of the mountain which houses all of Brisbane's TV stations.
Greg Carr, originally from Canberra, now lives in Brisbane. His navigator, Fred Gocentas, died earlier this year.
Colin Bond had won both Bathurst and the Austraian Rally Championship. He ran the Ford works rally team in Oz for many years. His navigator, John Dawson-Damer died in a crash at Goodwood a few years ago.
Wayne Bell went on to, among other things, run Hyundai Australia's rally effort and then set up their original WRC team.

Ross Dunkerton is still rallying. His navigator is a long time friend and fellow Renault Car Club member, of mine. David Kortlang. He owned the car and among the sponsors was PRD Realty, a national chain he (the "D") and 2 others set up.
Peter Phillips was navigated for a long time by my brother and they had many successes.

From the days when rallying was awesome.

Enjoyed that. Those cliffs look pretty unforgiving and the technology, a mic in 1 car.  :faint: :goodjob2:

All good stuff Trevor.

Must check back, pretty sure I saw Greg Carr over here on occasion, rallying Escorts and Celicas.

Yeah. Pretty sure he came to Gb once or twice. Would have been in Escorts IIRC.

Yeah. Pretty sure he came to Gb once or twice. Would have been in Escorts IIRC.

He did a couple of RAC's in the Escort RS (yellow with red stripes) and I can remember him doing another event in the run up to one RAC, might have been the Castrol Rally which was based in NE England and took in "killer Kielder" as a practice for the main event itself (pretty sure he took "man of the rally" for that one as he finished in the top 10 on a blind event he had no experience of and even managed a few stage wins (I would only have been about 11 or 12 at the time so it's a bit hazy!!).

For some reason in amongst those distant memories I seem to recall him having a guest drive in the Duckhams sponsored blue and yellow Celica on another event, might have been the Mintex, but I can't find any reference to it so perhaps not

My research shows himdoing two RA rallies.
And like you, I seem to remember him doing a "practice" rally.
I've got him recording a top 10 finish in IIRC the '79 RAC.
You can probably check results lists somewhere for that.

I have a sort of second hand contact with him through FB. Might send him a message and ask about the Celica.

Dazz sad to read that. just means owners could not sell for what they were insured, so burn them. that puts all our insurance premiums up too. they should just put these guys insurance up to double & give people who don't claim or have accidents premium down.

Not sure that was the case this time John.. One was a bit of a bomb the other looked newer and had been jacked up and the wheels removed!

My thoughts, either stolen and torched or broken down and vandalised over night (not nice either way)  :disapp:
