Just quick question for those who might know
what valve gear arrangement does the I30 diesel have ?
shim and bucket or are they a hydraulic zero lash set up
no apparent note in the info I've see to date , and no
adjustment listed on the service shedule

i would expect they would be hydralic as it makes sence to me, mostly they use those shims with higher reving performance motors. but i feel hydralic works the best as adjusts to expansion.
just wondering why you would be worried?

I considered this to be a bonus with the diesel. 

I used to do all my own maintenance and changing rubber timing belts was always a real chore that should never be neglected.  Most cars allow the piston to rise above the valve fully open position with potentially disastrous results if the valve timing gets outa whack and the two components make contact.  Stripping teeth off or breaking the cog belt eventually happens if allowed to get well past the use-by-date (100k or so).  Timing chains can make a bit of noise when worn but are much less likely to fail spontaneously.

Falcon taxi's do 650,000k never change the cam chain ( probably some wear? ) i've noticed if chains have good clean lubrication they last, but the system that is used to keep the chain tentioned so it does not jump clogs, can be the problem, but no one seems to check.
the problem with chains is they can transmit harmonic vibrations, that after long term can cause failure in other area's, sometimes it does not take long term to cause failures. thats were the belt can be good as it does not transmit harmonic's.
ive seen over head cam motors contact the valve to piston with out breaking the cam chain.

Well at the end of the Day Steve, that is one reason i chose the i30 ( cam chain) as harmonic's are debateable, but a broken rubber belt ( they make them very hi tech these days, but i think oil and heat are bad news with belt drive) is possitive, must be changed on time unless you like gambling, but chains are more trust worthy.
