How much would you spend on a pair of headphones? £50, £100, £200? How about £10,000? We had a listen…

In 1991 the engineers at Sennheiser were tasked with producing the’ ultimate headphones.’ To do this they were given as much time and resources as they needed.

The result was the Orpheus HE90, acoustic headphones that came with their own tube amplifier. The headphones weren’t designed for day-to-day use, and they certainly aren’t portable. Instead they are aimed at audiophiles who have plenty of cash and who wanted to listen to music at home.

Only 300 examples of the Orpheus HE90 were ever made, making them incredibly rare and a collector’s item within the audio community – recently selling for around £30,000 (£17,000) on eBay.

My hearing's not that good, I'll stick with my Nakamichi's, thanks. 0-20k is good enough for me, and I do mean 0.

I have several different types, but the ones I used most are bluetooth ones that cost $15 or less on clearance!

Would be great to have a listen through those Sennheiser ones though!  :goodjob:

Those are electrostatic phones and I don't think any of em come cheap. I probably saw them reviewed when they came out.

Here is a review against the Sennheisser HD800 (current top of the line) -

Sennheiser Orpheus HE 90 Ears-on - Headphones - Trusted Reviews

I like decent 'phones but they don't get enough use for me to pay much above £150. I currently have Beyer DT990 Pro phones which are pretty good. :)

They would have to sound great to be up in that price range, the best sounding one's I've ever heard personally were a pair of Klipsch x11i X11i In Ear Headphones | High Quality Audio by Klipsch® that I recently purchased but there not cheap either at $400.

Three things I never skimp on are " sight, sound and food " :D
