The speech impediment that buggered me up, even more than the Birmingham dialect, was in Tennessee.

My self and a couple of cousins were driving from Toronto the Myrtle Beach SC and we stopped at a diner in Tennessee where to my surprise they were serving surprising English style food i.e. meat and two veg.

The guy in the next booth was talking loadly (they were Americans after all) and at one point said he was/had been TARRED.   My head almost spun off it's socket, I thought blighmy surely they aren't still tarrin and featherin folks.    I could see no signs of tar anywhere and resumed my sausage and mash dinner.

later on he said "I am so tarred I could sleep on Ma Mortens washing line......"

So, there's you lesson for today.    These Mericans almost speak English and the Ozzies r getting as bad, this is what happens when we leave these colonials to their own devices <sigh>

 :goodjob:  :goodjob:  :goodjob:  :goodjob:

Driving from Toronto the Myrtle Beach SC is clear proof that we are dyed in the wool skinflints   :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

You Beauty = you bewdy :link: bewdy - Wiktionary if we're being Australian here :) also Bonzer = good.

Cant say I've heard of piss cutter... maybe eastern states terminology :undecided: like "grouse" = good but not used here in the west.

Piss cutter is one term that we used as young 'uns in the 80s.

Anyway, isn't most "Aussie slang" merely a ripoff of English cockney, particularly rhyming slang? And that shouldn't be surprising given our origins.

Actually, some of it is. Check some of Rick's examples above.
But it's evolved past that to encompass our weird Aussie sense of humour (sometimes a bit sick and often irreverent).

I've heard of Hit the Frog an Toad - Knock Shop and Ranga (aka - Bluey ) cant say I've ever heard of the others though which brings me back to one of my earlier statements that some of these could be region specific as other people " Westies = Sandgropers" I've questioned haven't heard of a lot of these sayings either.
